Oven for lead free...??? | 28 October, 2004

Hi all, I will be looking into ovens shortly for our conversion to lead free. I hear and understand why our Heller 1088 oven wont make the cut for lead free (4 zones isnt enough). Can anyone recommend a good mid range oven? We have been very happy thus far with our 1088. In the 4 years of service only the 1st thermocouple has gone bad twice. Thats not bad...

I would look at Vitronics-Soltec such as the XPM 820 or even the 520. BTU also makes very nice ovens. The Hellers I used to use went through blowers every 6 mos. and both of them came it defective. You must have got lucky or I got unlucky.

The same with Russ, I would look at Vitronics and BTU. based on my experience they give best results especially on the profile. Maintenace is also superb! BTU has modular blower, heater T/C assy. Vitronics is "XPM - NO PM System"

Now, BTU offers lifetime warranty on blowers and heaters for brand new purchase.

Again, this is based on my knowledge and experience with these two machines. I am not connected with these two companies and I do not provide sales pitch.

Thank you, Arman

We found BTU & Vitronics to be the best, The Vitronics looked a slightly better (and more expensive) machine, but on the other hand we've had completely trouble free operation from our old BTU's.

Oh, and the fact that BTU are No.1 in the world, and have been for as long as I can remember.

In 1995 we bought 4 Vitronics U520 reflow ovens with top heat only. We ran these ovens until 2003 for both curing and lead reflow with no problems. In 1998 we bought 1 U520 top and bottom heat and one U820 top and bottom heat and once again we had no problems with these ovens.

One day in 2000 the salesman for BTU came knocking at the door and told us about lead free and needing to obtain a delta T of 5 degrees centigrade. He showed us all the options that came with his oven and at the time the configuration we wanted was $15K more than the Vitronics.

We did the sums and looked at the specs and decided to buy a VIP98 with single forced cooling. We were amazed at how easy it was to create a profile which could achieve a delta T of 5 degrees centigrade across the board and through the heating zones. With our new found belief in BTU we purchased 5 more BTU ovens. These were the Paragon98's with twin forced cooling and all the options. We bought these two years old at Auction in 2002 and they were all less than 2 years old for $15,000 USD. These machines are even better than the VIP98's and would recommend them to anyone.

We had a few issues with the local BTU office regarding spares and support so we now go straight to the US for any technical help and I have to say they have not let us down yet. If I could buy the spares from them also I would not have to use my local office.

Hope this helps

Specnor Canada has developped a very well performed equipment for lead free application. It calls Tornado series and they offer in five, seven, ten zones. These ovens are made of stainless steel parts and with a very competitif price. You can reach them at 450-462-8651 or specnor.com. Have a nice day. Hyabro

Wow, I'm surprised everyone jumped onto the "Type Of Oven" bandwagon. Usually the type of lead free paste will determine your oven needs. Take these needs to most of the major oven makers and see if they can exceed these needs. Then take these oven makers and determine which would fit your compay best; you know, there local, there service, warranty etc.

Hi Chunks,

That would be due to Mr Dumont asking for recommendations on types of ovens!

Yes, I agree paste is a major factor, as is type of board (size, construction, palletisation, heat requirements etc), but also real experiences from users help.

Obviously everyone thinks they have the best equipment, but some of the posters, such as Russ & Grayman have a lot of history on SMTNET with intellegent questions & feedback so it can be taken with reasonable assuredness that their opinions are worthwhile listening to.

For example, there are at least 3 manufacturers of ovens that I wouldn't give time of day to due to poor quality products (perfromance & build quality) & lack of support, and no one else has recomended them either, whereas the names BTU & V-S are coming up again & again.

Cheers

Rob.

I agree Rob, I am only looking for a starting point to begin narrowing things down. For instance, I would never buy a new car solely on the salesmans word on how good it performs or warranty.... Word of mouth recomendations from experienced people are always a good starting point in my book. What good is a car with a 50 year warranty and a close service dept if its in the shop all the time, wont cost me anything but I have to take the bus everywhere... :) Thanks for all the input everyone.

One of my customer had an oven made of galvanized metal. when he rised the temperature for lead free application the zinc from the alloy(blower turbine and housing,...) was melted and was removed .I offered to my customer an used oven tornado made by specnor, this machine does not use galvanized parts(all the blower,chambre,... are made of sst)and presente a perfect profiling. that is why I suugest you before buying any oven contact these guys and come for a test. You will be very surprised for the price and the quality of the product hyabro

Question: If we run the same oven to run both lead free and lead paste. Will any lead contamination transfer to the lead free board by force conversion?
