Pick and placement forces

Pick and placement forces | 24 November, 2004

Hi,

I am an Engineering student doing some research on the component/nozzle interface on SMT Pick and Place machines. Could anyone tell me the force at which the nozzle hits the component as it is picked from the feeder or the placement force on a Panasonic machine? Any help you can give will be greatly appreciated.

P.S. If you have this information for other machines this would also be very helpful.

Many thanks Joe

This depends on the model. Most machines and turret style typically overstroke .2mm with a force of 250 - 300 grams of force.

the reason for the over stroke is to place the component into the paste. This can be adjusted through part library manipulation

Panasonic Nozzles | 26 November, 2004

Hi,

Thanks for the info. I have been told that the Panasonic nozzles are diamond tipped and as a consequence are quite costly. Do you know how many placements one of these nozzles would be expected to make? Would the nozzle fail by the tip cracking and bits chipping off or would the nozzle tip wear down until it is too short to be useable. If this is the case, does anyone know the shortest acceptable overall length of nozzle.

Thanks for your help guys Joe

Thanks Gaurav

I am a University student in the UK and am doing some research on nozzle design for the University. I am trying to get a gerneral picture of how long these nozzles last and there mode of failure. I beleive the nozzles are RSS, MA and SA

Any help you can give is greatly appreciated

Thanks Joe

They are actually diamond impregnated tips. The tip can be cleaned using a special jig. this will extend the life.

these nozzles are from a machine platform dating back to 1997. The RSS can last for 1,000,000 cycles. SA and MA are similiar but require cleaning and proper care. Mind you this is rated life based on perfect circumstances. Note, the machine that these are used on measures nozzle length during operation to determine of it is in spec. or bent. Moreover, life is increased as the machine measures the thickness of each part placed to ensure even stroke (force).

The length spec is on the order of microns, I just do not remember. I will look around.
