Morning all, can anyone recommend a wave soldering oven for use with lead free bars? Our trusty 20 year old Treiber wont make the grade without costly upgrades. Its time to let her go and buy into new technology. Any help would be appreciated.

I'm currently using Electrovert Vectra's right now. They do really well. I was actually in New Hampshire last month looking at Vitronics Soltec's newest wave soldering machine too. I think they would be worth a look as well. Good Luck!

Also, how much do these new generation wave machines go for? We do not need the top of the line model. We only run about 3 hours a day as we are designing less and less with through hole.

One of the things that I have found is the "benchtop/lab" type waves (Low cost) do not perform very well except on the simplest of products, they are lacking critical design elements such as adequate preheat length, laminar flow nozzle design, etc. The amount of time that a wave is used is not very important it is how well does it perform. A new wave with all of the important design considerations and without the "bells and whistles" is around 80k. You may want to look at a used wave and retrofit the pot and the pumps and see what that cost is.

However, there is a solder bar out there that is lead free and supposedly does not require any material mods to existing machines. It is made or marketed by Florida Cirtech, you may want to talk to them first and see if this is the right thing to do. The solder is called SN100C.

You should try looking into the Technical Devices Nu/Era. They offer the best warranty on their lead free solder pots. They use something called Titanium Nitride which has been tested to outlast Melanite.

The dross produced on the TDC machines is the also the least of the 3 manufacturers. That is really important when your accounting people see the cost of the lead free solder!

No matter what you do, get references from OEM's and CM's. Ask many pointed questions. Any reference worth his salt will give you the good and the bad of their purchase.

I personally would not recommend TD.

Hi,

We paid �60K for a 6622C from Vitronics Soltec, no idea about US costs since the dollar went down the swanny. Great machine though.

Not all lead free ovens come with Nitrogen capability - it depends whether you specify it or not, and it can add a lot to the price. Some can be upgraded at a later date but get the cost put in writing, don't just accept a ball park figure.

Again Vitronics have some great reflow ovens, but then so do BTU, particularly the Pyramax 98/150.

JD There are many lead free wave machines out in the market today. They promised to give best result for lead free. Companies here in our country who bought lead free wave machines 3 years ago is now having difficulties in controlling there machines as it is half cooked for lead free or lacking of features. Like for example, Length of the preheater must be minimum 1.8 meters, there must be a 2 kilowatt fast response preheater in between the standard preheater and solder bath, fast cooling system must be included and minimum 316 stainless steel solder bath.

The cost of a China brand wave machine is US$40k above and Eropean/American brand is US$60 above depending on your options.

Contact me if you need websites of American/European and China brand wave machine with all of the above features.

Definitely get references!

I think some of the most extensive lead free testing has been done at Thomson (RCA) and Visteon (Ford). You would definitely want to get their opinions.
