Ken: There is no complete package solution to the concerns you have. You need to weave you way through this project. I�m generalizing when:
Placement machine OEM: * Knows their machine (your interests are served if this is the proper machine for you). * Has relationships with other equipment suppliers to fill-out their product line (your interests are served if these are the proper machines for you) for people like you. * Has broad exposure to a broad range of assembly operations (odds are that many are similar to yours) and can design and set-up a line to meet their perception of your needs. * Can train you on their machine and contract for training on other machines with the machine OEMs. May do in-house training for you on those machines. * Can service their machine and field soft pitch problems with other OEMs machines. Probably has not contracted for maintenance support with the other OEMs. So, if you get frustrated and call the other OEM to solve your problem, they will tell you to go pound salt. As they should. * Has the phone number for arranging field service from other machine OEMs. * Has the phone number to call to have parts drop shipped from other machine OEMs. * Has totally alienated the local reps from other machine OEMs to you by passing-on (if they do at all) a pittance of their normal commission for machines sold in their region.
SMT Consultant: Often, these people are essentially out-side sales reps for a placement machine OEM with little exposure to other placement machines (your interests are served if this is the proper machine for you). See one of two things happened: (1) They had a job like yours, learned all there is to know about a machine, got laid off, needed a job, and now they do what they know. � OR (2) They were an in-house sales types at a placement machine OEM, got laid off, � Not that either of those things makes them bad people � Anyhow, these people usually over promise, under-deliver, and act as a gate keeper between you and the OEMs. Undoubtedly there are some good people out there. Finding the wheat for the chaff is the problem (which is why your posing the question). ;-) Many of these people like to contract to provide start-up assistance between you and the various OEMs equipment you purchased.
