Does anyone know of a reputable company who can put a complete SM line together and handle all of the details of design, integration, service, installation, etc.?

Broadening on Mohammed's point ... any placement machine supplier worth the price of their feeders will have a systems group that would give you a puppy to do a design and implementation project for your company.

Despite the fact that one might get the "solution" set up in place theres no guarantee that therere no problems for you. I wouldnt give to much of the decisions out of hand, I would have my own responsible people in the taskforce to accompany and implement the whole thing so they aquire the necessary knowledge to run, maintain and adjust the line in future. Training and workmanship in the SMD-process is essential and cant be bought somewhere else. A good understanding of the processes is a must and it developes while dealing with the subjects so get your people on job as early as possible. Stating your needs and the future prospects in detail will help you in getting the right thing and team together.

Good luck

Re: SM Line Solution | 27 April, 2000

When I look at most placement machine supplier's web sites, I only see the placement machines. I don't see any info on printers, ovens, board handling, etc.? If Philips, for example, were to put together a solution for me, how do they handle those components?

If you look at Phillips, for example, or Siemens, they offer on their websites their own equipment. The other stuff is contract stuff and normally not supported. If you ask directly they might get the stuff for you together but they wont do it for nothing I believe. You might better look for a good consultant in your area who is not in the selling business and not bound to contracts so you have the choice to pick the best equipment for your needs.

Re: SM Line Solution | 27 April, 2000

Depending on the type of equipment, volume and mix, and location, I can recommend a number of individuals that have done the entire project. Although I am an executive recruiter, specializing in SMT operations executives, I would not charge for such a referral. 800-257-0273 ext 35

Re: SM Line Solution | 27 April, 2000

Ken: There is no complete package solution to the concerns you have. You need to weave you way through this project. Im generalizing when:

Placement machine OEM: * Knows their machine (your interests are served if this is the proper machine for you). * Has relationships with other equipment suppliers to fill-out their product line (your interests are served if these are the proper machines for you) for people like you. * Has broad exposure to a broad range of assembly operations (odds are that many are similar to yours) and can design and set-up a line to meet their perception of your needs. * Can train you on their machine and contract for training on other machines with the machine OEMs. May do in-house training for you on those machines. * Can service their machine and field soft pitch problems with other OEMs machines. Probably has not contracted for maintenance support with the other OEMs. So, if you get frustrated and call the other OEM to solve your problem, they will tell you to go pound salt. As they should. * Has the phone number for arranging field service from other machine OEMs. * Has the phone number to call to have parts drop shipped from other machine OEMs. * Has totally alienated the local reps from other machine OEMs to you by passing-on (if they do at all) a pittance of their normal commission for machines sold in their region.

SMT Consultant: Often, these people are essentially out-side sales reps for a placement machine OEM with little exposure to other placement machines (your interests are served if this is the proper machine for you). See one of two things happened: (1) They had a job like yours, learned all there is to know about a machine, got laid off, needed a job, and now they do what they know. OR (2) They were an in-house sales types at a placement machine OEM, got laid off, Not that either of those things makes them bad people Anyhow, these people usually over promise, under-deliver, and act as a gate keeper between you and the OEMs. Undoubtedly there are some good people out there. Finding the wheat for the chaff is the problem (which is why your posing the question). ;-) Many of these people like to contract to provide start-up assistance between you and the various OEMs equipment you purchased.

Have a chat to the guys at QUAD. I believe they can supply printer/placement/reflow equipment as a turn key package and also incorporate board handling conveyors, gates etc;

Chris.

Re: SM Line Solution | 1 May, 2000

Do yourself a favor and hire someone who's been there done that. If your not familiar with the equipment or the operation of SFMT the industry can be overwhelming. Since the cost of installing a line can be expensive, there's no room for error.
