Rework Nihon Solder | 12 October, 2005

Hi Everyone, I am trying to site dress PTH holes filled with Nihon solder mixed with SAC solder at the rework station. But what i am seeing is the solder just doesn't melt and I am not able to suck the solder out of the PTH. Has anyone faced this issue. Please let me know

What is nihon solder and which SAC alloy?

Try using hot air to preheat the board to about 150C if you can, then try to remove the solder. Sucking pbfree from holes is very difficult since you have to achieve the alloys melting point throughout the entire P.T.H. and surrounding PCB area.

SN100C is the Nihon solder.

I had wave solder the board using SAC. Then had to put on solder pot, which had SN100C (nihon) solder.

I think I went upto 130-135 deg C.. Let me try cooking it to 150degC

Alot of folks are going to experience this with their poorly designed desoldering systems. I would check the temperature that is being delivered at the tip of the desolder gun. A small preheater is recommended. The other problem you will encounter is that the solder may not be captured completely within the desolder guns solder collection chamber. In other words it will cool down within the desolder tip chamber. Again, you need precise tip temp, good suction and a short nose chamber to desolder lead free solder. Hozan and Goot had fairly decent designs but tough getting spare parts and one of the systems solder collection chamber is made of plastic. Hot solder against plastic? Ersa somewhat duplicated the design and works fairly well but the handle does get hot. Hakko came out with a very good design and thats the one I use. Good Luck.
