Hi, Is anyone out there already testing components from their suppliers for:

1. to determine if the components vendors are slipping LF finish components without notifying the end user so, eventually these end up in a leaded assembly for a exempt product

2. to determine if the LF components being provided meet the RoHS standards

if so, what techniques are being used?? is anyone using the portable XRF?, any in house chemical methods??

are there labs out there that will do the component inspection/certification on an ongoing basis??

We are planning to purchase a portable XRF unit to do our LF component testing. While we were running our first proto run of LF boards for a customer, we just happen to demo a XRF unit and found lead in a "certified Lead-free component"!!! Considering this WILL happen again, we have decided to make the ($$$) investment. When not in use, you can even do contract testing for others possibly.

I looked at the Thermo and innov-X systems. Low was 32K, high was 40K. Ouch.

Actually we had a meeting with our solder supplier and thought a possible service they could offer would be a loaner program or on-site testing with portable XRF. I don't expect this will go far up the food chain. But, you never know.

Currently we are sending 3 samples per month for analysis. When a imbalance occures a correction must be done which requires a verification sample analysis.

I thought it would be nifty if our local rep could loan us the unit for a day.

we have two desk top XRFs and i would strongly recomend the desk top version over the hand held, its a lot more features and is more acurate. XRFs were mainly used for mesuring plating thiknesses before RoHS, and if your looking to use one most plating labs have them.

We have demo'ed the Niton and the Innov-X Systems' units. Prices quoted to us were exactly as Ken had mentioned. Serious Ouch but the situation I mentioned sure helped sway management towards a purchase.

In addition to contracting spare time with the unit, you can do your LF wave solder analysis in-house!

Being a mostly-government contract house, we bought an XRF for R/I to inspect for the PRESENCE of lead in components. No matter which brand you get, they are all easy to use and relatively fast. We were very impressed with the software capabilities of the Fischer units. Although we are looking for exactly the opposite of what you guys are looking for (presence of lead vs no lead) we have found our parts vendors to be.....not perfect.

I was contemplaiting purchasing a hand held XRF myself but decided they wouldnt be acurate enough for us. But two manufacturers did offer to lend me the units to evaluate them. I would recommend doing this before you buy one. feel free to contact me off line.
