Hover Davis makes a feeder that can be fitted to many pick and place machines. Runs about 7k. I've seen print on demand feeders at tradeshows for about 30k. If you've got enough volume, you could also laser etch. There's more capital involved, but it is very flexible. Also, no labels to buy/place. We're trying one out on a housing right now. John S.

I have an Amistar Label Placer. Although it is a bit more expensive than a feeder it won't take up placement time on your real expensive P&P equipment you can put in line or off line. with added printers it will print and place different labels on the same board... This thing has a lot of features. Been running it for about 4 years and it just works too!(Unlike some other Amistar machines in the past!) I get to say that cause in a past life I worked for them for 13 years and had to keep them running! Check it out, mide has definitely paid for its self!

I agree with John S., laser is definitely the way to go. More flexible and maintenance-free than applying printed labels. John S., are you using Yag or CO2?

We use preprinted labels and laser coding. For PCB we laser mark with CO2 (NdYAG for the aluminum heat spreaders). We either have an epoxy legend to burn out or we burn the solder mask to expose the copper ground plane underneath. Laser is a much higher capital investment, but doesn't have nearly the headaches associated with PCB labels.

I'm actually in the process of phasing in direct inkjet marking on my bare boards. The MEK based inks dry almost on contact, and the machines I have use a videojet excel HD printhead. I'm looking forward to see how it works for us. I think it may be pretty cool, no labels to deal with. Unit prints barcodes, serial numbers an even small logo's.
