SMD LEDs stick to nozzle while mounting | 19 May, 2012

We are mounting 3528 package LEds with pick & place machine.The problem is , nozzle picks up the LED , but it stick to the nozzle & not placed. Then it gives error in the next cycle. Can anybody suggest the solution?

Yes, I had the same problem. I ordered another nozzles, with dimension similar to dimension of lens, increase air pressure in mounter and increase place time.

We have been seeing this in the nozzles we have made. We will building all new LED nozzles out of teflon where physically possible. Many of the new Cree LED recomendations are for teflon nozzles. In some that teflon was not recomended teflon was the only thing that would work.

Try switching to a polymer nozzle. Your machine manufacturer may sell them on any machine shop can mill you one. Also check to see if your pick and place had a puff off function. Some older machines have a mechanical adjustment on the mac valve used for pickup. Also you might need to slow your machine down. In almost all cases if the LED is sticking to the nozzle you are damaging the LED cover. Youmight want to inspect the LED lenses that you have already placed.

We've had the same issue on our Panasonic CM machines with Cree XP type LEDs. Count on tools makes a urethane tip nozzle that we are using which eliminates the sticking, our concern with these is durability. Nozzle supply company makes a steel Teflon coated nozzle. We may try this if the urethane breaks down. Also increasing the blow off (slightly)and the dwell time on the mount helps.

We've bought nozzles from Count On Tools with good results. I noticed they have a bunch of special nozzles just for LED's so you might check them out.

Pick and place is not my area but I did have a customer a while ago with a similar problem. He did try different nozzles and air pressure. They use Nano protek on thier stencils. He wiped the nozzles with Nano Protek and the problem dissappeared. Only a suggestion. nano is similar to Teflon but will not scratch off. However nano is not designed for ant plastics etc. only Stainless steeek, Nickel, Invar etc. best of luck.

That not such a crazy idea. In a past life a long time ago we had a part sticking issue. some one suggested mold release on the nozzle. ( we also did injection molding) and it did work. It did not appear to leave any residue. We also use a cree Led on occasion, and had to up the blow off a lot and we use a bigger nozzle than what we would normal use. Less surface area to contact.

Great information guys..I am learning a lot. Reading all the info changing the nozzles, pressure and coatings are certainly narrowing the choices. A lot of coatings I have come accross seem to come from the Mould industry especially Teflons etc. I love these forums but have to leave most days as I am undergoing medical treatment.
