Need opinions on equipment for picking and placing truly odd types of components | 12 March, 2013

I was wondering if people could throw out some recommendations for what they think would be a good choice of machine for placing truely odd form components. Odd form meaning different types of custom shields ranging from rings to arcs. I know that people will group odd form as anything large that can't fit on a high speed chip shooter. In the past I have had limited luck on teaching components to older machines. I know this would have to been due to the lack of algorithms or user customization in the software. So I am looking for this. 1. A machine that can pick and place a truly odd shape component with high accuracy 2. Easy to program and manipulate the parts data 3. Excellent support and spare parts if needed. 4. relatively small foot print. 5. Machine will be used for placing shields and connectors only so throughput is not a huge demand.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Hi,

I don't know what you mean by really odd parts. Are they SMT parts that have a flat surface to pick them up? If so, probably several machines can do it. I know for sure Siemens can place almost anything. THey will help you with any type of nozzle for picking up parts - some of them really strange parts. Software can basically recognize anything usinge edges of the part, elipse, circle.... you name it. From the old machines GSM used to have some tricky recognitions for odd shape parts. I am not sure for the footprint. I assume that most of the machines capable to do it will be a bigger than a small machine. You should visit the leading manufacturers in the industry having the parts in my hands. THe best is actually to catch them on exhibition so they can show you the machine capability right away(just pick the aprt and recognize it.)

Yes the components are flat and no larger than 50mm in size. Most are full rings or just an arc of a ring. I understand fully the best way to have the capabilities proven would be to have the vendor demonstrate. I am kind of looking at what peoples personal experience is in teaching and picking and placing some of the non standard components such as QFP,QFN BGAs...

Currently we have older equipment one of them an older Panasonic fine pitch machine (MPAG3). The software on this machine is very limited on how you can define the part and have it recognize it reliably. Our other machine (Universal GSM) seems to have a more user customizeable way of defining parts and have had better results. My curiosity lies with the newer machines out on the market. I know in theory machines could pick and place but does real world prove other wise.

I would think that as SMT components evolve so do vision systems and the equipment.

As I said Siemems SX series can do a lot.

You need to look at samsung a few years back at apex vegas they were teaching poker chips and just about anything else you can put on the head.

You should take a look at Universal Instrument. http://www.uic.com You can search odd form component placement for a list of relevant web pages. UIC has several solutions for your application. FYI, I represent UIC in the southeastern USA. So, I'm biased but UIC is worth a look for requirements.

Assembleon AX201 is one of the most accurate odd-form placer. It can place anything, including leaded transformers, press-fit connectors, and of course odd form SMT components. You can even use a gripper nozzle for components without a flat surface to pick.

We've placed some crazy parts with Mydata but always used the mechanical centering jaws as the vision algorithm is lacking for pattern recognition. Could easily do a poker chip (or other circular things) in the X&Y but maybe the text wouldn't be straight, so if theta mattered a bunch keep looking.

I would definitely consider Juki.
