I'm looking for laser marking equipment for direct serial number Id on PCBAs. Is it recommended to laser mark on solder mask or copper or raw material?

We are using Nutek NTM4910-XL laser marker to etch 2D barcode on all our boards. We added solid silkscreen box on all our boards to create contrast. When we laser etch them, we just burn the silkscreen box so that we can see the soldermask under it creating a good contrast. You should make sure that no copper is exposed in this process.

For laser marking the mark quality is directly related to the PCB composition. If you want to guarantee a good mark every time and have control over the PCB being built (not always the case for contract Mfg) as the other responder stated, placing a white epoxy in the area to be marked will offer the best solution. If your PCBs vary by customer the mark will be highly dependent upon the laser markers flexibility to change focal distance and power output. Marking is merely an etching process that removes layers of the PCB surface to create a color difference for readability. PROMATION offers CO2, Fiber and YAG lasers. CO2 is most common and the lowest cost. Fiber is very flexible and can also mark other material surfaces, but at a slightly higher price.
