Has anyone been able to replace or upgrade the floppy drive for this old machines? I tried floppy drive emulator but have not been able to make it work. Floppy drive are old and have many problems anyway and would prefer to change it to something newer. Does anyone know how if you connect an external system to the machine using the connectors in the front will it be able to communicate with the machine and maybe load and save programs that way? I hope someone can help me out. Thank you for your time.

Hi. Did a similar update to our Emerald-X (YV88X) and the USB Floppy Drive emulator works like a champ! Installed within a few minutes with 100% success. Way more elegant than 1.44M floppies.

Can you share more details on the FD Emulator you have sourced? The one we purchased was off Aliexpress and cost just under $20 USD (with quick shipping to Canada). I know that there are many models in the market and not all are compatible.

More info..we have the same model referenced on this webpage:

https://www.philscomputerlab.com/gotek-floppy-emulator.html#

will share the details of the store from Aliexpress that shipped us this product.

Using the German s/w on the above page, just formatted a fresh USB stick to emulate 100 floppies !! This is gold.

The USB digital display selects which FD we wish to index. Confirmed on Windows that a PDF on FD #1 "disk" is working; then FD # 2 "disk" with another PDF file - all good. The frontside buttons allow us to select any of the 100 FDs. The emulator is virtual in the sense that it does not care which target hardware you are using. For this reason, we know that this purchased model can be mated with any piece of equipment to replace the mechanical floppy drive.

If there is an interest, can share product pix we shared with Yamaha tech support and also the vendor who is on Aliexpress with these widgets. At the time of purchase, this model was NOT available on Amazon and read that some of these models are for music synthesizers and did not work in all applications.

Thank you for your help. I did purchase one of those emulators but didn't work for some reason. Is there maybe a different setting on the jumpers? I will try again with the software you recommend and hopefully that does the trick.

I have installed these https://pl.aliexpress.com/item/1586956574.html?spm=a2g0s.9042311.0.0.64075c0fte25Rn in Assembleon Topaz-X (Yamaha YV100X) and Emerald-X machines and they work fine.

The one difference is that the one from my machine has a 26 flex cable and gets the 5 volts from it as well, not an external source.

I got new belts for the original floppy drives and installed them but the machine was reset to Japanese and after changing it back to English the drives are not running or powering up even though we can measure that the 5 volts are coming into it. I'm thinking is something regarding the settings? Does that makes any sense to you?

The flat ribbon cable for the floppy drive is keyed and respectively, the RED STRIPE denotes pin # 1 on the Floppy Drive Connector. Do check that that is correct.

As a simple test, remove the floppy drive and power up without the drive connected.

Does that work normally with your machine?

There is a separate 4 pin wire plug that is common to all 3.5" floppy drives and this USB floppy emulator that will power up the drive.

I change the settings to match another machine we have and that actually got the original drives working after replacing the belt. I ordered an adapter that will connect to the 26 pin flat cable and adapt to a 34 pin connector and pull the power from the flat cable to the 4 pin connector on the emulator. I'm waiting for it to come and try to see of that works.
