When conformal coating a PCB, when it comes to components such as alum caps, if no keep-out specified for SMT, would you recommend coating the entire component, or would you only coat the bottom portion (where conductors/leads are present)

Moreover, for a THT component such as a choke, that is enclosed (no coils shown), would you coat the entire component too, or only the through hole leads/exposed metal?

Hi @calebcSMT, It is generally recommended to avoid coating the entire body of aluminum electrolytic capacitors. These capacitors rely on the venting of gas in case of failure or overvoltage conditions, and coating the entire component could hinder this venting mechanism.

That makes a lot of sense - I appreciate the insight and clarity.

In regards to the choke, such as: RN114-0.8-02-27M for example,

would you also recommend not coating the body of the component of chances of effecting inductance? Or since it is enclosed, would it be safe to coat the entire component?
