I see some of the pick and place manufactures talking about how their machines (software) can help you control your inventory and keep track of where your SMT devices are. Is this really being achieved? Are the machines talking to the stock room / kitting department telling them how many parts are out on the floor and where to get them? Is there a software package out there that will alow the PC in the stockroom to talk to all the lines on the floor as well as the purchasing dept?

Mydata has a software system that tracks component batch codes to production batch codes and even to serialized PCBs for military applications. This is done via bar-coding or manual data entry. The system also tracks component usage and can back-flush remaining components after the job is done back to inventory. Your internal MRPII or ERP system can retrieve this data from the Mydata host.

So after barcoding takes place, is this info sent to the feeder or the outside world (is the feeder just a number that the pick and place machine looks for or does the feeder tell the machine what it has)? I guess if every machine and remote feeder fixture is attached to the same network it doesn't matter. When the feeder or machine thinks its out of parts and in reality the count is off how is this handled? Is every part accounted for? Lets say their are extra parts still on that reel, does the operator/kitter pitch it and install/barcode a new reel because the system says to?

Take a look at the BarTector system. It was designed initially as a verification system, but has expanded to included inventory tracking. http://www.bartector.com/

After bar-coding or manual data entry the data is in the Mydata database. The data is not stored in the feeder but in the database. The database links the component data to a serialized feeder and to a PCB s/n or production batch code. The machine software tracks component usage and shrinkage (miss-picks) etc...and updates the database. It cannot account for operator related component loss. No system can have 100% accountabilty unless you collect all components in and around the machine and feeder setup areas. This is not practicle for low-cost components. You have the option to edit the component count in the database.

Demand Wave Solutions has an inventory control module, BOSSgoldIC, that can be integrated with your present ERP system or implemented individually on an open architecture platform. It is on-line, interactive inventory management system that provides a catalog of valid items and allows you to control and locate these items in multiple plants and warehouses. The module efficiently processes all transactions that affect materials, and an online inquiry provides instant access to the availablity and location of stock. BOSSgoldIC performs critical calculations such as determination of low order point and economic order quantities and conveys their results in timely printed reports. Demand Wave Solutions has over 30 years of experience in the inventory control/order management solutions business, without litigation, and have implemented such solutons at Nortel Networks, Murray, Bio-Rad, Bombardier, Invacare to name a few. If you're interested in further information, please contact me schiocca@demandwave.com or (866)862-6609 ext 217. Also, please visit our website at http://www.demandwave.com. There is a system that Sony uses called Timms. This system has been used worldwide at Sony Electronics manufacturing facilities for over 12 years. They are selling the software package to customers now as a whole full functional product. They have installations at ove 15 OEM and EMS companies.

Timms can do the following:

Program generation for all vendors in your facility. Real time parts usage on all machines. Track all parts in facility and multiple facilities. Real time machine monitoring on multi-vendor lines. Inventory control(on machine, in warehouse, incoming parts)

The result is that your facility then becomes a pull system instead of a push system. What Sony found out was MRP and ERP were good for telling the shopfloor what they needed to build and how to get the parts to the facilities.

The problem was that no software package could control all the issues that go into producing electronics assemblies and tracking what parts were available at a moment in time.

Sony tasked the engineers from all its sites to develop a software package to do just that and the result was Timms.

Give Randy at TDK a call. His number is 847-830-6766. He told me about the TIMMS product line and it does exactly what you are looking for.
