Sorry about starting multiple threads about this but I'm trying to keep thoughts together.

Anyhow there's a thread up right now that is a good example of an old thread that is still good:

Basically back in June the guy posted about starting a user group and had no response. Now he's getting a person curious if anything ever happened with it.

By a 90 day policy this thread would be locked.

But if the respondent could still click on the original poster's name he could contact him directly. If they are able to come to a conclusion between them that's great; if not, they could start a new thread and re-address the original or revised issue. I think old threads are invaluable for background research but sometimes address more than the specific issue at hand. One point is though that in order to click on the original poster's name he (or she) will have to be a registered user in the current config.

Why does the person posting need post to the old tread?

What can't the new poster just say [words to the effect]

Hey yall!!!! I was perusing the fine SMTnet Archives and came across the following thread: http://www.smtnet.com/Forums/index.cfm?fuseaction=view_thread&CFApp=1&Thread_ID=5241&mc=2

It interests me because I have a similar problem. Here's what I'm seeing ... bla bla bla

What do you think could be causing this? What should I do? Where can I find a journal article on this topic? Have you seen something like this? Are there other other threads like this in the fine SMTnet Archivs? etc, etc.

And no one would ever care if the thread ws locked.

Dave (and Brian) -

OK, following the logic of your post above sounds good. I now have questions.

How would a user know to follow your suggestion? Especially a newbie? How would a new posting be titled so that it has relevance to a "locked" thread? The subject matter within a threads title is important for all that peruse the current thread list. Maybe using the "re: format like in e-mail replies would be useful. Which brings me to the next question: Could SMTnet create a pop up screen for replies to a locked thread that establishes a format to correctly post a new commnet, question, etc. to a locked thread? This pop up screen would supply the title "re: and a link reference to the original thread for history purposes.

Mike: You're correct, but a newbee doesn't care. A newbee is so thankful to just get through the clutter and ACTUALLY have the thread posted [and maybe get someone to respond with something that they can use to get their boss to just shut his BIG yap]. Seeing the post would be a blessing.

Now a lurker, a lurker might try to post like he / she has seen others post. In that case, they'd use a link to the older thread.

Brian and I talked about a permission screen for adding posts to aged threads previously, but I can't remember what we can-up with.

The more we talk about it, the more it seems we should just "live" with the problem, rather than committing scarce programming resources that probably better used for whatever they were being used for before we got into a froth about this whole thing.

See none of this posting to aged thread stuff that we're talking about does anything about the non-content posters to new threads.

I think the people that care about maintaining a semblance of purpose in this forum need to be aggressive in getting Brian to remove the offending threads. No ranting, no flaming, just email Brian and ask that he act. And we should get back to work and stop putzing around with this.
