Moisture Sensitivity for Integrated Circuits | 18 March, 2003

Hi -to all those familiar with MSL,

I have a few questions on Moisture Sensitivity Levels (MSL) with ICs. We have been assured by our distributers they mark any package of ICs shipped according to J-STD-033. We receive ICs marked as Class 3 and up, all the rest are tubed - no level marked. So I am to assume these ICs are Class 1 only -right? This doesn't give us a warm fuzzy feeling. Can anyone direct me to an article or book on MSL? I have read all the J-Stds on the subject. Unfortunately, we could not attend the IPC seminar on MSL in California/March/03. It would have been very informative. Thanks in advance...

Carol

Hi Carol,

You can find many complete articles on the subject of MSD Control in the MSD Knowledge Base on our web site at http://www.cogiscan.com

Do not hesitate to contact me directly if you have specific questions. My company is an active member of the IPC/JEDEC committee responsible for J-STD-033.

Hi

Read those guides again and then give IPC a call to see if they can direct you to any other materials. This stuff is quite old so they should have lots. The Mil does also.

IPC does have a Designers Council that serves your area. Give the leadership a call if you wish.

You can buy all those papers from that last meeting.

Also the ASME has a society that you might wish to check out as do some others.

Finally before I wear out, talk to some of the suppliers of Moisture Testing Equipment for their white papers.

Lots more, yet what I gave already tires me if I look at your time stand point. Good Luck and Keep Charging down that moisture.
