Evaporator for batch washer... | 11 January, 2005

Good day all, we have an evaporator for our PCB washer that has been fine up until recently. Everytime we run it, it boils over and makes a HUGE mess of everything. Any suggestions as to why this could be happening? Is it possible the temp controller is causeing an overheat of the fluid inside the tank and causing the boilover? We run Kyzen 4512 chemical.

Consider these three potential causes:

1) too much sludge - if the sludge builds up around or over the temperature sensor, then the sensor does not get an accurate reading.

2) too much chemistry in the evaporation solution - Check the temperature at which the evaporator begins to boil. If it's a lot greater than 100C, then it could be that there's too much concentration of chemistry. To check for too high of a chemistry concentration, pull a sample and check the specific gravity, or, use a refractometer.

3) faulty level control

Thanks for the suggestions...The unit was just cleaned last week and all the sludge was removed so that shouldnt be it. As for the concentration, im not sure. The only water that has gone into the evap is the rinse water. So im not sure if that could be it either. However, if i was to pull a sample and check the specific grav., what would a good/bad reading be? Thanks in advance... JD

Dear J. Dumont,

If the 4512's defoaming package is not active in the distillation process, then you may be dealing with foaming, which is exagerated at boiling point. The 4512's defoaming package may not be carried over in sufficient quantity from wash-to-rinse-to-evaporator. Check with your supplier of 4512 (Kyzen) for their idea's. They should also be able to provide you with a specific gravity.

Did the problem start right after cleaning? If so, the temp sensor may have been damaged during cleaning.

I spoke with my rep from Kyzen and he told me they have issues with the 4512 chemistry. I drained the 4512 out and put in our old "soap" and do not see any problems. That must have been it. Thanks for all your suggestions.
