Usb Type A Connector Help | 29 January, 2008

We have a customer who is using a standard USB Type A Connector on their assemblies. They don't want to add a housing to the assembly, but want to shield the metal USB connector housing from potential shorting with surrounding electronics within their application. I have called around to Kycon and Tyco and they have never seen any kind of snap on plastic cover or a plastic housed USB type A Connectector. So my question is what do you guys suggest that will be "pretty" to cover this usb connector with to prevent shorting? They are currently sticking double sided spongy tape on it and they don't like the way it looks. The only thing I can think of that is relatively simple is kapton tape. Thanks for your input, B

1) I am not aware of anyone making a snap on plastic housing either. 2) How can components short the connector? Are they dead shorts (components touching). If so, means bad design! 3) Could try some RTV compounds instead of kapton tape. However u will need to check the insulation strength etc to ensure no shorts when circuit is hot (live).

Whatever u do (other than a moulded housing), customer is not going to like the looks.

Yeah i don't know I have not seen the actual application. RTV was already discussed by the customer and they don't want it. That is what I was thinking too. It is poor design and they are trying to find a cheap way out that doesn't look cheap. Thanks for the input.

Have something molded by a company like http://www.caplugs.com and a little glue. No affiliation with caplugs.

Would a USB Type A Connector Hood [ http://www.l-com.com/item.aspx?id=7238 ] work? If that isn't just what you seek, Google => USB Type A Connector Hood

We have no relationship, nor receive benefit from the company referenced above.
