Burr Brown ICs bad solderability | 18 November, 2008

Hi folks! TI told us that we are the only one with the following problem... We discovered a really bad wetting characteristic of some SMD ICs from BurrBrown. At the moment: XTR106 / INA118 / ADS7844. After the reflow process we found out that this particular IC do not contact properly with the solder and the pcb. Other IC from other firms on the same board do not have this problem. Please see the pictures. If you have similar difficulties, please post here to have some more arguments for a new report to TI. Thanks a lot. Best regards, Andy.

We had very similar solderability problem with TI P/N SN74LVC2G34DCKR.

TI was leadfree before ROHS. I saw TI solderability issues over 10 years ago. The leads have paladium and need higher reflow temperatures.

I always thought that the use of palladium was specifically for conductive epoxies!?!

We had the same issue with the INA121's a while back if im not mistaken... i believe the design was changed do to other reasons with that part and the prob went away.

I don't know why they use it. I just know I read a TI white paper that said the problem wasn't their fault even though they knew that paladium made the parts hard to solder.

And once when I started a new job one of the guys said that the owner had had a part fall off the board into his hand when he picked the assembly up. I asked if it was a TI part, and it was.

Jandon, what is wrong with the picture you posted? Looks good to me? The first pix Wewilldoit posted were kinda scetchy except for the one with the bent up lead.

It's not the toe fillets people - it's the heel fillets you have to look at.
