PBF BGA or PB BGA | 21 November, 2008

All, I have a question in regards to a simple way to verify if a BGA is PBF or PB? I have mixed BGAs in a bag and I was trying to figure a simplified way to verify which is which? Can you hit one with the other type solder and forms differently? Any insight would be helpful ... ty

Hi, the easiest way to see if there is PB is to get blank paper and to rub the balls on the paper, the balls with Pb will left visible trace

Hi,

There has to be some marking on the BGA, the part marking will usually allow you to trace its spec.

Example: 123456 for Lead Part 123456G for Leadfree. Just google the part manf #.

Wouldn't rubbing them on paper be a huge ESD risk? I agree with looking at the markings and checking the manufacturer web pages for info on identifying the markings.

paper and cotton have lowest potential to generate static electricity see below, and usually is good practice to wear cotton glowe at least to one of your hands to not leave greasy finger spots on the gold finish of the PCB pads but anyway as far I understood the original OP is not going to do mass production, he just have bag with chips and wants to see which one is with lead, no internet, no catalogues

The following table shows you the triboelectric series for many materials you find around the house. Positive items in the series are at the top, and negative items are at the bottom:

Human hands (usually too moist, though) Very positive Rabbit Fur Glass Human hair Nylon Wool Fur Lead Silk Aluminum Paper Cotton Steel Neutral Wood Amber Hard rubber Nickel, Copper Brass, Silver Gold, Platinum Polyester Styrene (Styrofoam) Saran Wrap Polyurethane Polyethylene (like Scotch Tape) Polypropylene Vinyl (PVC) Silicon Teflon Very negative

so never store teflon and rabbit furs around your chips! ;)

I am not disputing that cotton gloves are a good idea. They can help protect a lot of parts and surfaces (if the gloves are kept in good clean condition, that is, but that is a whole 'nother thread topic). The fact of the matter is though, paper will still hold a charge. Many IC's are sensitive to 200V which is far below the detection threshold of the human hand. If I am trying to determine what the part is, it means I potentially have a use for it still, especially since many IC's are worth $100's. I am not going to subject it to a potentially harmful surface, if there is a safer way to determine what the part is made of. Trying to turn a BGA into a pencil is the method of LAST RESORT for testing the metal content of the balls.

Although super guru Bob Willis said the lead check swabs are not relyable, we have had good results with them. We allways make sure to include 1 confirmed leaded sample to check if the chemical reaction takes place. But we only use them occasionally on suspicious batches, not to sort out components.

In your case, there is a good chance of errors, the best thing to do would be to make a 'hybrid' profile (basically a low leadfree profile - do a search), this way you wouln't have to sort them at all.

Looks like my message got cut out. What I meant to say is I like balloons but you can't use em at work next to pcbs cause of the static. You gott abe sencable about stuff like that. Always where your ground straps and you can were what ya want.
