Trimmer placement. | 20 July, 2000

We have difficulty in placing a trimmer capacitor chip using our Philips CSM 84 VIII pick and place machine. This Trimmer capacitor is supplied by Murata and its partno is TZBX4P300BA110T00 and value is 4.7~30 pf. While trying to place the component, the nozzle picks up the component but due to vacuum, it sucks the jelly film over this component and eventually the nozzle gets blocked.

Does any one have similar experience ? And what could be the solution ? Presently, we are putting a person to manually mount prior to reflow which is not the best method.

Ketan, If you are using a z-axis head, pay very careful attention to the pick up height so that you don't force the head into the component. Also pay very careful attention to the placement height, we set the component height to 0.05 to 0.1mm over the actual height of the component so that it is "dropped" onto the pcb. If you are using a standard or ic chucking assembly with mechanically set height you set the placement ( nozzle ) height so that the nozzle is not driven into the nozzle shaft at placement. This means that you have to build your feeder height up so pick up can be achieved. Make sure you don't build the feeder up so high that the heads can crash into it. Unfortunately this also means that you are dedicating this head to that or similar style components. We clean the nozzle when placing these style of trimmers twice in every eight hour shift.
