Hello,

I have a CSM-84 pick and place machine, and every time a make a programm the location where the part get place is way different from the location on the program which tell me that the offset's are way off, but when I try to calibrate the machine believe I need the calibration board and the guy that sold me the machine has no idea where it is, is there another way to calibrate the machine or any one has one of those boards for sale or rent that will very help full for me.

A simple trick I read either here or on another P&P forum is to use "Silly Putty". Place a small thin spot of Silly Putty on the top of the front conveyor rail, and put the machine in "manual" mode. Steer head #1 over the putty and lower it, leaving an impression of the nozzle in the putty. Note the XY position. Now steer the camera over the exact center of the nozzle impression and note the new XY position. The differences are the offsets, which you can now use to update the head #1 offset data in "data in" menu. Repeat the procedure for head #2, #3, and the beam spot, and you are set. The Silly Putty works well because it will not stick to the nozzles and clog them.

Thank you, that works perfect!! Now I was able to set up the offset's and program the machine, but now head #1 will move to the feeder location but it will not move down to pick up the part, then it moves to the drop area, but its only happening on head 1, heads 2 and 3 work great. Is there a setting that I miss? Or is it something to do with the program itself? Thank you in advance.

Does nozzle #1 lower at all when it should pick up a part or is it just staying in the fully up position? If it does come down, but not quite far enough to contact the part, there are adjusting nuts on top of the head that set the lower limit for nozzle movement. Was it picking up parts before you reset the offsets?

Thank you for your fast reply, head 1 moves to the pick up location and stays up, then it moves to the dump location and moves down to drop the part, it was running before just the offsets where off (moving up and down). If I chance the head from head1 to 2 or 3 it works fine, meaning they do move up and down, if I tell head 1 to move up and down on manual mode it works fine, its olny when I try to run the program tha it will not work. Any suggestions? Thank you for your help.

Gabe,

You now need to teach the Datum position for the front feederbar and for the rear feederbar too. If I'm not mistaken the datum position for the front feederbar is position no. 21. Just put a feeder on position no. 21 and use the camera to find the actual pick posiion on feeder 21. Enter the values in the datum position in Machine Data. That should be all.

First clean and de-bur the hole in the nozzle, then try it again. If the Head does not pick up at the feeder, then moves to the dump position...it means that the Vacuum Sensor Board has detected that the nozzle vacuum is above the LOW threshold setting, therefore the head will attempt to try discard a SMD part over the dump position. You will notice that in CHECK mode it does not happen, but in NORMAL mode the vacuum check is in operation so the machine must clear the problem before continuing. For the early machines, the vacuum PCB has red leds. On later machines, there are no leds, instead the software configures the vacuum levels by a hidden menu. If your machine is the early type and has a RED led on the vacuum board when the vacuum is first turned on (even in MANAUAL), then the LOW setting requires adjustment.

Thank you guys for your help I was able to get the machine running on all the heads and now I can at least run my boards, I have another question is there a way to have the camera move automatically to the location on the program or to do a search on the program it self, and what is the CSM box? is this what I need to be able to save the programs in a floppy disk?as you can see the machine is very basic and the guys that sold it to me do not have a whole lot of info, extra parts or knowledge. Thank you for you help.

Dear Gabe,

Once you have the mount data in the program, you can move the camera automatically to the location by tracing each location one by one. If I remember it correctly it is done by having the location highlighted in the program and then by pressing SHIFT T or SHIFT P on the handheld keyboard.

The CSMBox is the offline software with which you can send your program to the machine using the RS232 interface. To save the program in a floppy disk, your program should be in the UFOS format. I suggest that you just make the first program (by punching in the data) on the machine and then save the program on the floppy disk, open it in excel and then make a macro which will save your raw Centroid data into the UFOS format. Thank you, I have the program done and ready to run, but Im not able to get the machine to move to the mount location automatically, you say to highlight the location and press shift + P or T but how do I highlight the x,y data 1st? Or is this done on manual mode?

There are three versions of the CSM84, old, older and really old. The older machines can only do fun things around the PCB if you toggle RUNMODE 1 from AUTO to be UTILITY... then you can use the utility program "PIC" to trace around the PCB or do minor changes. This can be painfull. Changes you make are automatically saaved on the floppy.
