Help required selecting reflow oven

An 8 zone oven will give you better thermal control over the whole process. It's useful for lead-free soldering, or for boards with varying thermal loads/shadowing, etc.

You can make a 5 zone work for lead free, provided the boards don't have significant thermal loads, but, the more copper, or large components you use, the more difficult it will become.

If you can, I'd recommend the 8-zone, as it should satisfy all of your needs now, and into the future.

It's all about temperature versus time. The longer the over IE more zones the faster you can run. That doesn't seem to be the case for you so a 5 zone running a little slower will work. What many forget is that oven manufacturers can recommend what will do the trick for your application by sending them your worse case or highest through put board and have them run it for you and supply the profiles attained. Do this with 2 or 3 suppliers and you'll soon know what works best for you.

Yes, it is time and temperature, but it is also speed and distance. Even though you can run a longer machine faster, the boards have a longer distance to travel and you do too, so the cycle time per board may not improve be reduced as much as you think. I am assuming this is a batch process I suggest you contact members in your local chapter and ask if you can visit their operation and observe their process and possibly run one or two of your boards and time them. It sounds like you have limited floor space - so, take your time and talk to people in your neighborhood. A reflow oven is very robust and I never heard of one being worn out so it will be with you for quite a while.

Basic rules:

1. The longer the oven the better(if you have the space)- better temp control, better repeatability, better throughput. 2. Only convection - don't get IR heaters 3. Buy reputable brand machine

I use a lead free 3 zone essemtec oven which I love. It's on the smaller side (wish it was even smaller). It works fine in our application. Maximum width is 300mm and only uses 5-6kwh average (25A max). Made in Switzerland. For some reason I don't trust chinese ovens unless they come from companies like Heller. Precision, repeatability and reliability are not there for production enviornments.

Neoden has released a pro consumer model smart 3 zone oven that might suit your needs but I don't know how long it will last. Runs $2k. It does save on space.

I ended up getting an older second hand machine (2003 Heller 1707 EXL) from a local company upgrading their assembly line. It is in mint conditions and was used in air conditioned room and had maintenance every 3 months.

I suggest you buy 8 zone oven, its best for baking and you can easily control overflow of heat, I am also using this, I recently bought it from https://www.reecoupons.com/categories/black-friday and I easily can control heat whether its overflow or not, but its totally up to you, if you wanna buy 5 zones you can, these choices totally depend on you..
