This one concerns moisture sensitive parts, would you believe?

1.0 MOISTURE SENSITIVE COMPONENTS IDENTIFCATION. 6.1 Moisture sensitive component level 1 through level 6 designated by the manufacturer. 6.2 Moisture sensitive components are packaged in DRY PACK'S or are stored in humidity controlled environments. 6.2.1 DRY PACK'S that contain parts are labeled as level 3 through level 6 moisture sensitive components. Level 1 - The component can be out of a humidity-controlled environment Unlimited at < 85%RH. Level 2 - The component can be out of a humidity-controlled environment for one year at <30C/60% RH. Level 3 - The component can be out of a humidity-controlled environment for a maximum of 168 hours <30C/60% RH. Level 4 - The component can be out of a humidity-controlled environment for a maximum of 72 hours <30C/60% RH. Level 5 - The component can be out of a humidity-controlled environment for a 24 to 48 hours <30C/60% RH. As specified on the label. Level 6 - Mandatory bake. Bake before use and once baked must be reflowed within the time limit specified on the label.

I also tried to get general information on which parts are rated for a particular level but it seems we have to get the information for each part from manufacturers or distries.

Sometimes distributors establish the drypack-process for their stock and shipment and they dont distinguish between different level, just the one package material. Important is what it says on the label, hopefully it is filled out correct. So for your case, better that kind of package even if its not necessary than the other way round. Its not a rule but good information on that topic "IPC-SM-786A".

good luck Wolfgang

Al, There are no 'rules of thumb' that you can utilize for plastic devices. I have seen various Moisture Sensitivity Levels, (MSLs), for the same package type, i.e. PLCC28s as levels 1, 2,3,4,5, even 6 in some cases. Your best bet is to call up the component manufacturer, and ask them what the level is. Nobody knows their part better then they do. Being from the military world, if I can't get an answer from the vendor on what the level is, I have to assume, (there's that word again), that the part is a level 6. Obviously, that isn't a good thing when it comes to running production. Don't take a chance on these things, get the info from the vendor. Remember, moisture sensitivity is a lot like ESD. If you comprimise the part, you won't know it. It may not fail today, or tommorrow, but when it does they always come back to manufacturing.
