0201 components

0201 components | 14 September, 1999

I'm hoping to use 0201 caps and resistors in a new design but so far have only found one company who makes such small devices (Murato).

Can anyone direct me to any other supplier?

Are there any particular problems associated with using such small devices?

I almost can see 0402's and canu usually place 0603's now with little problem. I think that covers the problem issue from an assembly standpoint.

From a supplier standpoint, I wouldn't want to be me. Actually, I would if I could make enough of them that stayed together and could be effectively placed and reflowed, notwithstanding providing stencil apertures small enough on "normal" foils.

I'm ready to go back to Ohmega Ply as "embedded" types after this question.

Unfortunately I've placed a few in test runs. I agree with Earl, these things are darn outright small. I tested placing R's & C's from Panasonic,Philips,& Murata.

Nothing more than a grid pattern for daisy chain testing.

I'll say one thing you got to have good calibrated feeders. Most of the placement equiment vendors I've talked to aren't quite ready to do 0201's in the mainstream. A lot of nozzle development is going on right now. Plus we noticed some packaging issues w/ our parts.

Thin Film Technologies in Mankato Minnesota offers 0201 resistors. You can also talk to the people at KME as they supplied us the samples we needed to tst out the equipment.

From what I know, Fuji new CP 7 might handle the 0201 pretty well, also, if you get the upgrade kit for the CP6-42. they can handle the 0201 too. The second one can handle the 0201 is the new siemen HS model. I think not only the feeder`s, camera size also affects the performance.

Iam doing some work with O2O1s and am facing tombstoning problems. From screening experiments I find that a N2 reflow results in more number of tombstones than in Air. Would appreciate anyones inputs on why this happens, or how I should tackle the problem

Pay close attention to the wetting speed of your solder paste. If it is faster than 1 second you may want to experiment. I would recommend >1.4 seconds. We found a step function decrease at 1 second.

The camera is important. I found the only machine, granted this was a year ago, capable enough for volume production, was the KME CM-88. Our test had 1 mispicked device of 5,000,000 attemps and 0 misplacements.
