Air Quality sensor for smt area | 6 February, 2023

Hi guys, So i am trying to find out what type of air quality sensor you use in your facility if any?

What other sensors are required to be installed to ensure that air quality is safe for workers?

We have both an inline oven, and a selective solder machine that have the air pushed outside but sometimes workers complain of headaches or unusual smell. One complaint was also about the jet printer running and "pushing out" funny smell.

Thanks in advance and looking forward for some input.

What I would look at is the chemicals being used in the facility where the complaints are. Flux/flux gel, IPA, cleaning agents, etc. Perhaps you should limit the usage to certain people only, who would be trained how to properly use these. Something else - use extractors for workbenches, especially for the people doing rework. Fumes can be damaging long term, and people need to understand the risks if they don't use extraction. Use extraction for ovens too, if there is already, check for leaks in the ducting, check for any valves that have been accidentally closed (true story, happened). Clean/change the filters of the extractors as per manufacturer recommendation for all extraction units. If you have stencil/PCB washing machine in the production area, use an extractor there too - and/or switch to a less smelly cleaning agent. We use extractors everywhere, people understand the risks of not using them. Nobody ever complained about anything, unless somebody is burning a massive connector at the BGA rework station :D Regards, Tom

Hi Tom, thank you so much for your feedback! I have been looking into getting better extractors for the work areas, However we don't have any for PCB washer so that might be one of the issues too. What kind do you use for the PCB washer? I'm very new to this role so I'm trying to get an understanding of what to get.

All our extraction equipment is from Purex (I am a happy customer, I can highly recommend them). The one we are using is a 3 tier 9000-800i model. Also, all our extractors are pushing the air out, obviously through a lot of filters. Have a maintenance plan done too for changing the filters as per my previous message. Before getting better extractors, check all your filters, maintenance sheets if they are up to date. Plan to do LEV testing too (Local Exhaust Ventilation). My location is UK - hope all these help. Regards, Tom

Good ventilation is also important to removing aerosols and other vapors. Make sure your building HVAC is pulling in a good portion of outside air. If people are complaining try to up the ratio of recirculated/outside air. This will add cost depending on your climate.

Air purifiers are another great solution but also have added cost of replacing the filters.

Fans to circulate air will help also
