Universal Advantis Y1 axis error code 10201 | 27 June, 2023

We powered up our Advantis machine after leaving off for several months. When we powered it up went to zero it we get an error on the y1 axis during zeroing. Command move home: pattern step 0.

The y negative limit is hit during homing, the axis then backs off in a few step and then it stops with this error. We don't see any other error lights anywhere.

Any ideas what could have happened when it was powered down?

I work on a few of these Universal machines before. Check your severos ( I believe their 6 of them ) in the back of the machines all of them should be on. If you see a red light on one of them it's gone bad and that's your Y axis card. It's easy to replace but it's heavy and bulky.

We checked the three pacsci pc800 servo controllers and they all look OK, no red or error lights. VRM amps all look OK. Still haven't found the issue.

We swapped the Y1 and Y2 pc800 controllers with no change. We swapped out the UIMC III-I cards from another machine with no change. VRM amps all look OK, no errors.

The machine moves the head both in the x and y directions during the zeroing attempt; x zeros OK and but after stepping off of the y axis limit switch the machine throws error 10201. This makes me think there is some kind of problem either with the servo motor itself or the encoder feedback?

Documentation reads: Axis Event 10201: hasn't been initialized or enabled, can't perform command.

This message is generated when a move command is requested and the requested axis is not initialized or enabled. To recover, palm-down, palm-up, push INTLK RESET, and retry the task.

Check: axis circuit breaker, UIMC board in the VME for the axis may have failed, bad servo amp.

We checked all of the recommendations and have found no faults with these components.

Since you haven't received any useful advise I will throw my 2 cents in. I do not know this machine but in general what you describe is an axis that does not get it's home pulse in time. Many machines will have an in-range sensor that gets flagged before the limit sensor. Once a machine has the in-range switch set it then needs the zero pulse from the encoder. Look to see if that sensor is damaged if it is present on your machine. Also move the Y to the middle of it travel before zeroing. If your machine stores calibration data in a file it may have been lost if the machine was off long enough for the battery to die. You may need to send the file to the machine.

Wipe down and clean the 2 Gold strips on Y Axis and the encoder ( located on both sides of the machines covers must be removed ) Probably has dirt happen to someone who had an old universal 2007 that was sitting outside in the open air for a few days. It will home then rehoming again because it didn't find the sweet spot of the home position. Careful with the gold strips that's what's it reads since it has linear motors.

I did clean the gold strip and black encoder box pretty good it took me a few trys but it work ( it did had rust on the machine from the rain I guess... from being out side for awhile)

Thanks, I do recall reading about loading firmware onto some of the VME cards (VRM axis controllers I believe.) I will review this again. I agree that it seems to be some issue with reading axis position after hitting the home switch.

The first thing we suspected was the y-axis encoder so we blew it out and wiped the slide off with a cloth and IPA. We used to encounter this on our GSM's and had to clean them once or twice per year. We will try this once more.

We were able to get the machine to zero after 'scrubbing' the encoder head. We used a piece of paper towel and IPA and slipped it between the head and the scale. We moved it back and forth a few times to clean the head then blew out any remaining dust.

In the past we've never had to do that, just wipe the scales and blow out any dust. We learned more about the machine than we intended but we've learned our lesson.

Thanks for everyone's help!
