Quad IVc PPM Software - How to Vision Align 0402 ? | 19 December, 2023

Hello everyone,

We recently got a Quad IVc machine with PPM software on it. We are struggling with 0402, as we get plenty QuadAlign failures. We ticked Vision on failure, so that we limit the amount of rejected parts, but on 0402 Vision system give false positive, I mean that sometimes there is no part on the nozzle, but the vision system still detect something.

So far we got that for 0402, 0603, 0850.. we needed to check "Non-leaded" but it there any other valuable config we missed on the way ?

I dont know what kind of feeders your using for 0402 but it matters. It must be repeatable. It also sounds like your feeder z height is wrong. Test pick on the feeder and change the z until it just starts to pick it up and your z will be set. One other thing is to make sure the nozzle is mounting on the z rod correctly. If its not all the way on, once you try to pick a part it will slip up higher and you will reject parts.

Thanks for the quick reply :) We've used some classic feeders that we repurposed ourselves by switching the original optical barriers (index wheel and motor wheel) with twice the resolution. It gives okayish results, not great, but the 0402 is aligned with the head for picks.

Nozzle fully goes on the head.

Do I have to understand from your answer that vision is not the solution and I should focus on making it 100% repeatable with QuadAlign only ?

What I would prefer is to fix both, on one side making things more less prone to failure with QA, but also having a backup Vision one failure.

I was quite hyped at first of the possibility to double inspect every QuadAlign Failures with vision. At the moment for every Non-Leaded components I get vision issues, it picks ghost edges on the nozzle, and detect components when they are not effectively on the nozzle.

At the moment on the Vision side, we only have "Vision on Spin Failure" (in general tab) and "Non-leaded" (Vision Aligneent) checked. Is there something I can do to improve the Vision problem ?

Not many people use the vision on spin failure for 0402 parts. I would focus on repeatably picking the part from the feeder. If you insist on using vision then maybe you can take a permanent marker and darken the nozzle tip. Dont use a sharpie as it is shiny.

I've tried yesterday, I've spray painted a XF nozzle with mat black paint. (with some protection on the tip obviously).

It is not really succesful though, Vision still have false detection. When a part is indeed on the tip, it detects it but with absurd X offset (0.2inch approx). I'm not sure what's going on..

I dont know if vision on spin fail was ever for small parts....its more for bigger fine pitch that fail in the quadalign and then given another chance to pass over the upward camera.
