Hello Mr. Peterson,
I don't know where you're writing from, but if you're more than 25 miles from Rhode Island, I'll humbly and graciously accept the "expert" title.
In general, I have to say that the backpanel removal tools are worth the money. As Im sure youre aware, scraping a single backpanel can cost well into the thousands of $. Trying to repair a complex high density backpanel connector without the proper tooling may destroy the backpanel PCB.(Hint: if the connector removal is required because your connector vendor shipped a defective product, at a minimum, make them give you the tool.)
Ill assume that the VHDM you asked about is the male backpanel side, not the female daughter card side. I believe the male backpanel module has individual signal pin rows alternating with ground columns. Cant you just remove the damaged contacts and replace them without removing the housing? If not, you should be able to individually remove all of the contacts and ground columns, then the housing and re-press another connector module.
Please dont hesitate contacting me for more information. Best Regards Jim Zanolli
