Full IR Reflow versus conventional convection ? | 21 January, 2006

Hi all,

Maybe someone have experience with Vitronics -Universal FULL IR Reflow oven 4816. We have to make choise between above IR and Panasert REF-A? Maybe some Electrovet is better than both of them ?

Any opinion will be very much appreciated.

Good morning,

IR reflow is yesterday technology. IR heating principle has a lot of issues with heat transfer capability (shadow effect) and uneven PCB heating. To avoid this forced convection ovens were developed. Reflow oven for SMD soldering must have forced convection principle. Look at OmniFlo/OmniExcel series if you are interested in Electrovert. They are pretty good.

P.S. My own choice is forced convection only.

Wow, these are still around? Don't go IR, especially with these units. They are very inconsistent. Maybe for adhesive, but I wouldnt try reflow with them. Yes, you can reflow with them, but this model of oven will constantly change on you. I spent 7 years battling with this model. It was good for its day, but now convection has changed all that. Of the 3 you have to choose from, go Electrovert convection Electrovert.

Hi Pavel,

Thank you for your time.We wonder if anyone have experience with Panasonic - Panasert reflow oven model REF-A.It is used in Asia a lot.

We have to chose among few models of reflow ovens : 1.Panasonic REF-A 2.Hollis(Electrovert) model Surf FCR310 focussed convection reflow 3.Universal Full spectrum IR model 4816 oven.

Shadowing and nonuniformity of IR is surrely bad but think that if you have good designed thermal masses on PCB it does not affect the soldering that much.

Hi Chunks,

Thank you very much for your advise. It is realy helpfull.Seven years of experience are the most precious. But we have already payed the Universal Full IR.We can use it for curring of glue and paint.Do you know where we can find user or service manual or any valuable data.

For reflow we shall go for Hollis-Electrovert Focussed Convection reflow and Panasert REF-A.Support for this machine will be hard to get.Hollis is made in 1995.I do not know when Electrovert (Cookson) purchased Hollis? It is interesting that Hollis engineers holds the patents for reflow process.

Maybe someone have comments on quality of Panasert REF-A reflow ???

Thank you very much.

Sorry, that was 2 jobs and 12 years ago. Not sure where you can find the material you're looking for.

Chunks, Have you worked with Universal Full IR 4816 CRS reflow-curing oven ?? We have received it and powered up.It looks like new, has touch screen monitor with commands. Why not to use it for simple uniform low pofile components (avoid shadowing)and of course for adhesive curing ? BUT it asks ACCESS CODE !!! It is four digits code. Do you have any idea what the code is?? We tried simple 0000,1111,1234, ... I really do not see the reason why they make this access codes ? IF someone can help will be very thankfull (will pay)

Mike,

Have you contacted Universal Instruments yet? If not you should call them. If I am thinking of the same oven, this oven was manufactured by ETS (Energy Technology Systems) or http://www.energytechnologysystems.com. I take it you bought this oven used? Do you have the exhaust controller? I think you will need this to regulate the venting. Too much venting and the oven will cool down. I am familiar with the 1993 vintage machines. These were good machines. They are sort of a mix between IR and convection ovens. I can't remember the code however. Too long ago. You will also want to monitor this oven with a Mole/Kic/Datapaq or some other over profiler. The IR elements can burn out.

Call ETS at 509-483-0900. I think they can help you. Let me know how it works out.

Good luck,

Chris

Is this a Universal oven or a Vitronics oven? I am confused on your postings. If it is a Universal oven with a touchscreen of 90s vintage, call ETS.

Hi Criss, It is Universal 4816 CRS.It have touch screen and "Keypad sound" speaker. Each time you touch the screen it give nice sound.I have tried with universal in EU but still waiting for an answer. It is from ETS.On all the control PCBs it is ETS part number. We have tried reading from dump taken from the EPROMs inside but w/out success. The software date on the EPROM label is 2-12-93.

It looks so good to forget it.We do not expect much of that owen but to cure or solder some simple PCBs why not.

If you get any idea please contact me. Good to know that someone is willing to help. Seems that Larry is the most interestting ?! Once again we shall be very thankfull (or pay if needed) for the info.

Thank you again

Chriss, I was now on the ETS site. Seems that we shall resolve the problem. They offer upgrade of the touch scren monitor to a normal PC. I will send them a letter tomorrow. If we make it I will feel free to send you a nice gift.

Chris,

Thank you very much for your help.People from ETS were very kind to give us the access code. We have already exhaust control on the oven but seems like need to increase the outer fan capacity. I will let you know. Promissed to send you a nice gift. How to reach your adress, phone?
