Could anyone kindly share any good/bad experiences that they have with their MRP / ERP systems in a small-mid size contract manufacturer environment?

We've been using DBA Classic but is looking for a more scalable, robust system. Our main concern is purchasing and inventory management esp. regarding how well the system checks for shortages when there are Customer AVL lists, alternative/crossed components for BOM items.

We're looking into: Epicor Vantage, Intuitive Manufacturing, Made2Manage, IFS, Syspro Impact, Softbrand 4th Edition. Any insights into these or other systems will be greatly appreciated! Thanks in advance! Sean

we use IFS, seems to be quite good, ive used several MRP systems and id say this is the best one ive used, one drawback is there are so many screens(100's) its difficult to remember which ones you need to use. from an engineers point of view i would recommend it. its also handy as it doubles as a document storage system.

Hi I've used the following:

SAP Connect & Go (or SAP in a box - designed for smaller companies)- despite the description a LOT of set up work, but not bad once you get the hang of it. Costs lots to change things though.

Tetra CS3 - YUK!

MFG Pro - very good, but was a long time ago now & the whole ERP/MRP/MRP2 offerings have come a long way since I last used it.

We were also using DBA classic and went to Intuitive about 4 months ago. I think it is a good system but it is also a huge difference from DBA. We picked it for a number of reasons but .NET was a major one. To some extent we are still learning it so have not made a lot of customizations. Going from DBA to an application like this is an incredible change. DBA is a very simple system. If you are not in a hurry, keep in touch. Intuitive is releasing a new version in March and I will let you know how it goes. We narrowed our list down to Intuitive and Epicor. I think we picked the better system for what we do but keep in mind this will be a HUGE project.

Thanks for the great feedback. Could you tell me whether you think it's a major handicap for Intuitive since they do not have a complete solution to address checking inventory and buying for cross-components? They sent me a doc for beta implementation of AML, which does not address cross-component issues well.

How do you guys deal with that with Intuitive ERP? Or do you just manually check for cross/alternative components for BOM items?

We have narrowed down to Intuitive ERP and Epicor Vantage, but neither of them seems to address cross-components well, and now I wonder if we should look harder or if there's just no solution for cross-components in BOM out there ...

Please kindly advise.

If I understand your question, niether deals with it well. Intuitive did add an approved mfg for us which should now be a normal release in the next version, previously they only used approved suppliers which is rediculous. They are trying to support EMS companies, they also added reference designators for us to thier standard product.

If you are trying to have an internal part, and lets say have 3 mfg's approved for one customer and 5 approved for a different customer and you want the system to deal with that, and still only have one part number, I dont think anybody deals with that except maybe x-erp/Manix which is written in FoxPro which is an antique. We felt Intuitive was the best choice because it is mostly .NET so it can be easily customized. There are a lot of bugs in the 7.XX versions. Version 8 is supposed to be out in a month or so. I would not make a decision berfore you see version 8 of Intuitive. Also, dont underestimate the magnatude of the transition, we switched in November and felt we were well prepared but it has been one hell of a learning experience.

I just saw a pre-release demo for the 8.0 AML functionality, which should do the job. Our assessments and concerns with the different ERP's are similar to yours, for example in not wanting to go with antiquated implementations.

My question is, if you say their version 7.xx was buggy, then have they been responsive in fixing the bugs? Or if not, were there so many bugs that prevent you from effectively performing daily tasks?

One of the reasons why we're switching from our old DBA Classic is that it's too buggy and there're virtually no bug fix support, hence we can no longer operate effectively without migrating to a more robust and upgraded platform.

Please advise. Thanks again!! Sean

Intuitive has been somewhat helpfull in fixing the bugs. Thier main goal has been to release version 8 though. My understanding is that it is 100% .NET where the 7.xx versions were not quite there. The 8.00 version will be released soon but, it is only for new installations. The upgrade from 7.xx versions will not be out until the third quarter. We were led to believe we could upgrade as soon as 8.00 came out and most of our problems we were told would not be fixed with patches because they would be fixed in 8.00. We were VERY dissapointed.

I see. We've just tentatively signed a contract with a cancel clause within 30 days. If we do decide to proceed, we may have to settle with their Beta version of 8.0 rather than implement with 7.x and then upgrade...

Thanks again for the info! Sean

SJ,

We too have been running Intuitve for well over 2 years now. It does have it's issues, but what software package is perfect. The tech support that we have used has been EXCELLANT, with in 2 to 3 hours. We started with version 6.0, we have been through all the 7.0 upgrades and are now running 7.2 without issues. Version 8.0 is a total redesign of the tables and how they are acessed. Our company will NOT be moving onto Ver 8.0 for the first year or so. From past experince one should never be the first with any new software release......unless they have a great IT department to work on all the bugs. ALL MRP/ERP systems rush their products to the market then go back and fix all the "Feature Enhancments" that are found by the users. I would recommend Inutive 7.2. Just my 2 cents worth.

Duckman,

That's a very good point. The issue is that 8.0 has AML which is one feature that we're particularly interested in. Also I still am not sure what's the lesser of the evils, having to deal with the bugs in a new release, or having to upgrade and re-learn the software in a short period of time.

We're still considering Epicor Vantage so we'll decide then ... Thanks, Sean

don't know what kinda price range these systems that you guys mention are in, but, for about 600-700 dollars, PCMRP is very low cost and quite user friendly.

I can't tell you what's good, but I can tell you what's bad.

We use JD Edwards. To give you an idea of how well it is suited to the electronics environment, most of the help screens, should you be able to find them, use recipes for bread and food as an example.

I break into spontaneous torretts every time I go near that system. Some of the problems are related to the way the powers that be set it up, but those problems could be tolerated if the interface was ANYTHING like any other program you may have encountered.
