Clear plastic SMT tapes - what plastic grade for recycling | 15 October, 2014

Can anyone suggest what plastic type SMT tapes for mostly embossed/deep pocket tapes are for recycling? I am talking about semi clear type, for 16/24mm widths usually pocketed. The black tapes we get from our Tape and reel supplier are thermo formed "6" but I do not know how to determine what the clear ones are if the same????? PEte

VTEK says …” Carrier tapes are made from three primary materials. (All are manufactured in accordance with EIA standards) 1 Polycarbonate is a black plastic material with excellent impact strength. It is used primarily for bare die and small form factor components. Polycarbonate carrier tape is available in non-conductive (NCPC), static-dissipative (SDPC), and conductive (CPC) formats 2 Polystyrene is the most commonly used raw material for carrier tape. It is used for larger components requiring less precise pocket forms. Polystyrene carrier tape is available in static-dissipative (SDPS), and conductive (CPS) formats 3 Paper tape is used for passive components, typically in the 0201 up to 1210 device size range. It’s available in a half-punched or press pocket format”

Texas Instruments says … “The carrier tape is made of standard polycarbonate or polystyrene materials.”

3M says … http://multimedia.3m.com/mws/mediawebserver?mwsId=SSSSSufSevTsZxtUOx_UNYt1evUqevTSevTSevTSeSSSSSS--&fn=Choosing+Carrier+and+Cover+Tape.

REEL Company GmbH says … Base material, Various materials availlable.- Black, conductive with a surface resistivity of GT 107 Ω/sq and clear materials made of PS. PET, PC…

Advantek makes more tape than anyone else and they say … http://www.advantek.com/pdf/T-10050-4_CarrierTape.pdf

I can sort them and keep them separate, the problem I am having is finding a way to get titis properly into the correct waste stream. My local garbage (city) does not pick up from business's. Recyclers charge to pick up unless you have hundreds of pounds. At least now that I am grinding I am reducing the volume of material by like 10 to 1 which Is a good thing.

But do you separate this waste from others. Or do you separate by plastic? Because if you do the second it would be easier to find a way to recycle. Do you use an optic sorter ?
