SCAM32 Virus

SCAM32 Virus | 25 July, 2001

I just finished cleaning-up [I hope] a SCAM32 virus from my computer. I opened an attachment to an email received through SMTnet asking for assistance. The file had a ".doc.pif" extnsion.

The virus is sending emails to my address book. Do not open attachments from me [or anyone else for that matter]. If you have opened such a file your computer is infected. McAfee VirusScan and others can delete the virus and tell you how to recover your computer.

Yes, this has been a problem for a number of users. The virus is a worm distributed via e-mail.

The message it sends reads:

"Hi! How are you? I send you this file in order to have your advice See you later. Thanks"

Opening the attachment will launch the Worm.

The Symantec site has an excellent utility to remove the W32.Sircam.worm virus. This is located at: http://www.symantec.com/avcenter/. The file is a small .COM file that can be copied to the infected computer and cleans the virus from it, when it is run. To run the utility, simply double-click the program icon.

We have found and quarantined a number of attachments received in site user Web Mail accounts containing the W32.Sircam.worm. This may cause a file not found error for some users, when attempting to download or open the attachments. We will periodically scan for viruses, but are not likely to prevent all users from being infected. Please exercise special caution, when opening attachments. More information about the W32.Sircam.worm, anti-virus precautions, and security issues can be found at http://www.symantec.com/avcenter/ and also at http://www.cert.org.
