Reflow Oven Profile Optimization | 19 June, 2024

Hi everyone,

I am having some issues achieving consistent reflow profiles for different PCB designs due to variations in thermal mass. I need advice on optimizing my reflow oven settings to handle these differences effectively.

I want to know the best tools and methods for thermal profiling; determining optimal zone temperatures; adjusting conveyor speed, and managing thermal mass differences.

Any tips for software tools and automation solutions would also be greatly appreciated.

Thanks in advance for your help!

Thank you greatjennymsbi

Here we just upgraded to "KIC SPS Smart Profiler" early this year. It's a lot easier to use compared to old SlimKIC-2000 we used before. You might want to check it out.

One thing that I did to eliminate 1 set of variables is I calculated the slowest belt speed that puts the board in reflow for the longest time spec'd for by the paste manufacturer. So every recipe runs at that belt speed. Eliminating the juggling of higher temp vs slowing the belt, when I need more heat for higher thermal mass.

Hi Jenny,

There are some key steps for achieving good profiles:

1. Proper oven for the types of PCBAs you are producing. Enough heated and cooling zones to allow flexibility to reach an in-spec profile for the variety of boards.

2. Proper thermocouple attachment and sample location selection. This is critical so your measurements are accurate and consistent and cover the complexity of the assembly.

3.Well defined Process Window including paste, component, and bare board specifications.

4.Capable profiling device with software to define a detailed process window and with optimization software with a variety of recipe search/prediction modes to achieve your recipe setup goals.

There are some good tutorials about tools and methods for profiling (Basics of Profiling: Level 1, 2, 3) on the kicthermal YouTube Channel and information about profile and recipe optimization tools on kicthermal.com.

Best regards,

Miles
