Technical Presentation:

  1. Mis-Print cleaning - The difference between A side and B Side cleaning might be more than you think.
  2. Rework:  Some Spot Clean Better Than Others

Speaker:  Debbie Carboni - Global Product Manager (Electronics) KYZEN Corporation

Abstract:   1) Mis-print cleaning happens to even the best controlled production floors.  Poor tooling, new board, new stencil quality, etc.  Knowing how to properly clean a misprint can save your company thousands of dollars in materials, boards, time, and reputation.

Whether removing solder paste that was incorrectly applied to the A-side of an assemble or smeared, how you clean it can make a difference.  Double-sided misprints where side-A has already been soldered, but the solder paste is not in the correct location on the B-Side, creates larger differences.   IPA is known for moving the flux from one area to another and not recommended for most modern flux materials, including water soluble fluxes.  Stencil cleaning chemistries and equipment will do a great job on the A-sided misprint, but can cause serious issues to reliability on an A-Side reflowed board.     Join us for a deep dive into Misprint Cleaning and learn:

  1. Best practices to follow when you find a misprint board:
    1. How to avoid solder balls in the wrong spot.
    2. Label
  2. A-Side vs. B-Side and how not to disturb the encapsulated protective shell of the No Clean flux.
    1. Chemistry selection
    2. Temperature
    3. Time
  3. How to protect the OSP on your bare board.
  4. Alternatives to expensive equipment investments-we know you are doing this anyway, happy to share a few tips.

The Boston SMTA Chapter invites you to join us for a better understanding of  how to cleaning misprints properly and future headaches, waste and risk, while improving your bottom line.

2)  Every electronics’ manufacturing factory has some type of rework/bench top cleaning process in place, often multiple stations.    IPA has been widely used and still is, even though there is significant research on IPA’s inability to remove/dissolve flux residues.     Many however are moving towards engineered cleaning solvents with either an aerosol or  pump bottle using brush, swab, wipe, and occasionally soaking container with full PCB submersion.   The challenge of “spot” cleaning  is:

  • Achieving consistent results with any manual cleaning process
  • Contamination relocations
  • Proper rinsing

Do you wonder why IPA doesn’t seem to work like it did 10 years ago?  Do you know what causes contamination relocation?    Do you know the little tricks to help you clean properly with the least amount of chemistry?   These are just a few of the questions that will be discussed.    This presentation will discuss the influencing factors for inconsistency in cleaning as well as the precautions you can take to improve spot cleaning methods.

All attendees are eligible for either custom onsite training or cleaning assessment free of charge value up to $2,500.  Sponsor by Kyzen Corporation
