Technical Presentation:

Circular Economy suggests a self-sustaining manufacturer can create a "widget", then distribute, be used by a customer, then have spent product returned, then re-purposed into something new and similar to the original widget. This presentation will discuss the many lessons learned from testing circularity and highlight new opportunities available through advanced metals recovery technologies at Advanced United Refining (AUR). Although the new recovery and refining technologies at AUR specialize in precious metals, the lessons learned apply uniformly to manufacturing/product distribution in general.

Emerging technologies generate new and better products every year and the model of use use-and-throw-away is unsustainable for many reasons including conserving raw material resources, carbon emissions and potentially hazardous impacts on local waste operations and communities.   Creating a robust product stewardship system meets the needs of corporate ESG goals, consumer expectations, avoids NGO shaming and potential regulations.

The footprint of a company and/or product requires accounting for both environmental and business impacts. On one side: material balances, carbon input/output, waste outputs, etc are critical to measure environmental improvement, but businesses sustain through revenues and profits.  A case study showing how business goals were met while lessening the environmental impact will also be presented. The case presented involves scrap printed circuit boards with some gold plating. The gold was recovered and refined into gold plating salt for return to the plating shop. The other option would have been for a return in the form of gold bullion. The results show a 90% lower carbon output compared to smelting and an increase of 46% revenue back to the customer.

AUR processes have been perfected over the past 25 years designed to meet the needs of manufacturing and recover value from waste and by-products with the lightest environmental impact possible. Through the use of hydro-metallurgy and multiple recovery techniques, the end products are readily usable with no further processing required. AUR is certified to ISO9001, ISO14001, ISO45001 and obtained R2V3 for responsible recycling. Customers track the flow of their materials through a carbon emission offset calculator.
