Note on Main Shaft Crack Detection: Wind turbine main rotors are horizontal, gravity-loaded machines. Development of a crack in this rotor causes a reduction in bending stiffness of the rotor shaft, which almost always causes a bow to develop. The bow changes the amplitude and phase of 1X radial motion of the shaft, and the 2X radial motion amplitude and phase may change as well. Accelerometers are unlikely to be able to detect this motion due to the low speed of the main shaft. Rather, the shaft needs to be observed directly with one or more eddy-current probes mounted near the main bearing. These probes can detect changes in 1X and 2X radial motion amplitude and phase if a crack develops. For main bearing shaft crack detection when proximity probes are installed, the recommendation is to qualify and trend 1X and 2X amplitude and phase and look for changes. This approach has not yet been field validated, but all indications are that basic shaft crack detection methodology from GE will apply in this application. This methodology is supported in the 100M60 wind monitor data sheet under the Supported Transducer option for Proximity Channel (for Shaft Crack Detection).
