Re: Dibasic Flux Activators

"Dibasic" means a molecule containind two acid functional groups, such as carboxylic acid. The inductive effect makes the dibasic activator more active than mono-basic activator.

Dibasic Flux Activators

Dr. Lee: When talking about halogen-free flux activators, what does the term "dibasic" mean?

Inductive effect is the electron attraction force between chemical moieties. Inductive effect in flux activator would stabilize the dissociated organic acid, thus enhance the acidity, therefore increase the flux activity.

A more active flux may help, but if the nickel underplate on the component body is corroded [and not soldering], if could require a VERY active flux. Just an off-the-wall thought, are you sure that your heat recipe activates the flux properly? Slow

Clean Solder paste

I need active solder paste to overcome solderability problems - I believe it have to be washed out, the issue is not the cleaning process only the paste (flux) activity level.

No don't know about such a chart. But, consider changing the method used to check flux activity. Consult your flux supplier for a test kit that will measure actual activity (acidity). SG is a suggestive method.

Background on activation energy for diffusion can be found: * Materials textbooks * College lectures posted on the web. Use 'google' or someother search tool. As a guideline, the higher the activation energy, the harder is is for diffusion to occur
