Hello Phil, AOI equipment has been around for a number of years. I remember evaluating a machine around 5 years ago. At this time the system was not able to learn right side up or upside down characters. Well, the newer systems have come a long way.

Your objective is to go for a quality process and if you acheive that you don't need AOI! But how do you monitor your process? AOI can do this. Just select a machine that suits your purpose and budget.

Anyone else? This is an interresting question. With 1000PPM won't your AOI be worse then the process it is supposed to measure? Won't your AOI become more of a bling thing to impress customers than an actual usefull tool to improve process quality

SPC for each assembly(I use C(for board defects)NP(for unit defects) at the end of reflow to determine process capabilities determine Control limits. Once control limits are set, inspectors stop the process until out of control limit is addressed and
