Calling all Metcal users.... I am trying to get an idea of the expected tip life of a given Metcal solder tip and I am met with the generic response of "there are too many parameters" to give such a number, either in average number of solder joints

The temp your iron is set at is somewhat irrelevant, it is the temp at the tip right? We use metcals and have 700 deg tips for leadfree. As you may know Metcal temp is at the tip and not a heating element seperate from the tip like many irons are.

I've used METCAL for years for work such as you have. The base can be a bit expensive, but the number of different tips that they offer (from sold bars, to formed tips for specific component removal, etc..) is fantastic! www.metcal.com
