Im trying to get the XY data to program the SMT machines. since i dont have the file, im trying to convert it from the gerber drawing. the closest one to represent the component placement is the solder pad. ive tried using linkcad to convert it to XY

What do you want to do with the gerber file? Most gerber outputted data is in ascii and can be read with notepad or any text editor. If you want to view the gerber data there are free viewers on the web ie: gerbv.sourceforge.net Hope this helps.

Gerber in general is not best data set for assembly, alot of processing has to be done, manually or via software tools, all with their nice features, but as you state there is no actual datum XY , pin 1 , rotation references thus has to be 'generated
