The discoloration/shadow appearance is a clear sign of black pad which is from nickel corrosion in the gold bath.

We exclusively use a printer to do glue these days but keep in mind there are times when glue and paste work best. Things like poor layout (ie shadowing) or tall parts that may shadow themselves or a wave solder machine that is not particularly good

Shadowing sounds about right to me also. Really dicey experiment to run if you are dropping expensive tantalums just to save a little coin in epoxy and processing time.

Well assuming that the parts are genuinely damaged when rejected and you want to rework them to reduce scrap,you could use a shadow graph and get the mechanical spec on clear film.Then rework accordingly you should be able to rework most leads.

First thing to try is to rotate the board 90 deg if possible, this will let you know if shadowing is the cause. Regards Matt
