Lead free solder slivers (swarf)

Electronics Forum | Thu Jun 07 03:54:16 EDT 2007 | testbloke

I currently have issues with "slivers" of solder on or behind QFP devices. This has only occured on PB Free boards (we currently produce PB and PB Free on same equipment). This is not tin slivers, this is a long thin sliver of solder measuring up to

Hi TIA, Check to see if you have solder resist between the pads on your PC board. If the board house just blocked out the resist all the way around the entire row, you may want them to change this to individual pads.

Solder briding on QFP

Electronics Forum | Sun Apr 04 00:51:01 EDT 2010 | jmelson

On the Xilinx chips, I am pretty sure these hairs are NOT tin whiskers. The solder in this particular build was SnPb, and pure tin would almost certainly melt at soldering iron temperatures. My theory is that slivers of the lead frame material, lik

Have you thought about wave solder contamination ? . We had a similar fault where glued chips were being shorted out due to "slivers" of solder dross being deposited onto the card . These dross slivers were being generated because the solder bath had

Minimum lead pitch to avoid bridging

Hi BR, Are you screen printing adhesive to the bottom of the board? If so, have your stencil make put openings between the leads of the thru-hole part. SMT adhesive acts as a natural solder resist. So placing a small sliver between the pads works

Conductive contamination and the elusive solution

Oh, sure, on fine-pitch parts you need a microscope or at least a good magnifier. But, OK, you have some kind of contamination. Solder is one thing, but where are these stainless, aluminum and copper particles coming from? Stainless makes me think

I had a batch of Xilinx chips that I believe had microscopic hairs of the lead frame left as slivers on the leads. These maybe got encapsulated by the solder plating, and then were free to move when the chips were reflowed. You could see the tiny h

We also had this problem and found similar results with the anti-backlash nuts binding. We went through the process of cleaning the lead screws and the nuts which resolved the problem for about 6 months only to have it return. We learned that the

Re: Solder Paste Dispensing for BGA repair

Jeff & Ted, we have used a dispensing system too and yes, I agree, we are not too happy with the results. Not at the point that it doesn't work, though. I think our problem basicly is that we have selected an entry-level dipensing system. We are app
