An ACI Technologies customer inquired regarding printed circuit board(PCB) failures that were becoming increasingly prevalent after the SMT (surface mount technology) manufacturing process. The failures were detected by electrical testing, but were undetermined as to the location and specific devices causing the failures. The failures were suspected to be caused predominately in the BGA (ball grid array) devices located on specific sites on this 16 layer construction. Information that was provided on the nature of the failures (i.e., opens or shorts) included high resistance shorts that were occurring in those specified areas. The surface finish was a eutectic HASL (hot air solder leveling) and the solder paste used was a water soluble Sn/Pb(tin/lead).

Electronics manufacturers protect their circuit boards with conformal coatings. Conformal coatings serve as a barrier from environmental hazards and internal shorts, tin whiskers, and corrosion at the board level. Within conformal coatings different material chemistries specialize in shielding from an array of hazards and can be applied by multiple methods. The most common method is atomized spray which disperses the material into a fine mist. Alternatively, non-atomized coating controls the materials' dispense shape while maintaining the original liquid form. While some applications demand atomized spray and other scenarios overlap between atomized and non-atomized coating, this paper focuses on the circumstances where materials are ideally suited for non-atomized, selective coating.

Latent short circuit failures have been observed during testing of Printed Circuit Boards (PCB) for power distribution of spacecraft of the European Space Agency. Root cause analysis indicates that foreign fibers may have contaminated the PCB laminate. These fibers can provide a pathway for electromigration if they bridge the clearance between nets of different potential in the presence of humidity attracted by the hygroscopic laminate resin. Electronic industry uses a number of metallic materials in various forms. Also new materials and technology are introduced all the time for increased performance. In recent years, corrosion of electronic systems has been a significant issue. Multiplicity of materials used is one reason limiting the corrosion reliability. However, the reduced spacing between components on a printed circuit board (PCB) due to miniaturization of device is another factor that has made easy for interaction of components in corrosive environments. Presently the knowledge on corrosion issues of electronics is very limited. This paper reviews briefly the materials used in electronic systems, factors influencing corrosion, types of corrosion observed in electronics, and testing methods.

The art of screen printing solder paste for the surface mount community has been discussed and presented for several decades. However, the impending introduction of passive Metric 0201 devices has reopened the need to re-evaluate the printing process and the influence of stencil architecture. The impact of introducing apertures with architectural dimensions’ sub 150um whilst accommodating the requirements of the standard suite of surface mount connectors, passives and integrated circuits will require a greater knowledge of the solder paste printing process.The dilemma of including the next generation of surface mount devices into this new heterogeneous environment will create area ratio challenges that fall below todays 0.5 threshold. Within this paper the issues of printing challenging area ratio and their associated aspect ratio will be investigated. The findings will be considered against the next generation of surface mount devices.

As with many advancements in the electronics industry, consumer electronics is driving the trends for electronic packaging technologies toward reducing size and increasing functionality. Microelectronics meeting the technology needs for higher performance, reduced power consumption and size, and off the- shelf availability. Due to the breadth of work being performed in the area of microelectronics packaging/components, this report limits it presentation to board design, manufacturing, and processing parameters on assembly reliability for leadless (e.g., quad flat no-lead (QFN) or a generic term of bottom termination component (BTC)) packages. This style of package was selected for investigation because of its significant growth, lower cost, and improved functionality, especially for use in an RF application.
