Introduction Of A New PCB Surface Finish For The Electronics Industry

Technical Library | 2021-07-06 21:18:02.0

A new PCB surface finish has been developed that offers outstanding performance and excellent environmental protection. This finish has the potential to replace more common finishes such as ENIG, ImAg, ImSn, ENEPIG, or OSP with a chemically resistant plasma deposited coating. The substitution of the wet processes with this dry plasma process offers significant advantages e.g. lower quantities of chemicals used, environmental benefits and improved operator safety.

Best Practices Reflow Profiling for Lead-Free SMT Assembly

Technical Library | 2013-06-05 23:14:44.0

The combination of higher lead-free process temperatures, smaller print deposits, and temperature restraints on electrical components has created difficult challenges in optimizing the reflow process. Not only are the electronic components and the PWB at risk, but the ability to achieve a robust solder joint becomes difficult, especially if the PCB is thermally massive. In addition, the constant miniaturization of electronic components, hence smaller solder paste deposits, may require the use of smaller particle-sized powders (...) This paper is a summary of best practices in optimizing the reflow process to meet these challenges of higher reflow temperatures, smaller print deposits, decreased powder particle size, and their affect on the reflow process.

The Importance of Viscosity in Conformal Coating Process Control

Technical Library | 2013-10-13 10:22:48.0

There are numerous factors which directly affect the conformal coating process to greater or lesser degrees. Those which have major impacts irrespective of the substrate / PCB and assemblies include choice of coating material and method of application. Whether conformal coating boards by dip, robot, batch spray or brush methods the viscosity of the coating is a critical factor in the overall process control.

DPC (DirectPlatingCopper) thin film process is a method of prepare copper film using magnetron sputtering technology. This process is a process in which the copper target with the target material is placed in a true cavity chamber, and plasma is generated on the copper target surface by magnetron sputtering technology. The ions in the plasma are bombarded on the surface of the target, which is sputtered into fine particles and deposited on the substrate to form a copper film.

Bare PCB inspection for Track cut, Track Short and Pad Damage using simple Image Processing Operations

Technical Library | 2021-05-06 13:48:05.0

In this paper most commonly occurring Bare PCB defects such as Track Cut, Track short and Pad Damages are detected by Image processing techniques. Reference PCB without having any defects is compared with test PCB having defects to identify the defects and x-y coordinates of the center of the defects along with radii are obtained using Difference of Gaussian method and location of the individual type of defects are marked either by similar color or different colors. Result Analysis includes time taken for the inspection of a single defect, multiple similar defects, and multiple different defects. Time taken is ranging from 1.674 to 1.714 seconds if the individual type of defects are marked by different colors and 0.670 to 0.709 seconds if all the identified defects are marked by the same colors.

Using Stencil: Design to Reduce SMT Defects

Technical Library | 2023-06-12 19:46:10.0

Solder paste printing is understood to be the leading contributor of defects in the electronics assembly process. Because yield accounts for such a large percentage of the margin, the greatest opportunity to improve profitability in the assembly of most electronics can be gained by reducing or eliminating solder defects. This article examines process adjustments made through stencil design that correct a misalignment situation between the PCB and stencil, leading to a 43% reduction in assembly defects. Examples of each are found in Table 1.

SELECTIVE SOLDERING TECHNOLOGY SELECTION

Technical Library | 2023-11-14 19:42:24.0

Selective soldering is not a new process. It is already exists and used 30 years ago for through-hole component by different industries for automotive and medical products. Now most manufacturing industries are moving forward on SMD's miniaturization to reduce PCB complexity and balance component density on the board to ensure a good assembling process. By this concept, why selective soldering still utilized and used? Does it because of component reliability, uniqueness or complexity having this in mind next question will be which platform will best fit for the product

Instrumentation for Studying Real-time Popcorn Effect in Surface Mount Packages during Solder Reflow

Technical Library | 2014-06-12 16:40:19.0

Occurrence of popcorn in IC packages while assembling them onto the PCB is a well known moisture sensitive reliability issues, especially for surface mount packages. Commonly reflow soldering simulation process is conducted to assess the impact of assembling IC package onto PCB. A strain gauge-based instrumentation is developed to investigate the popcorn effect in surface mount packages during reflow soldering process. The instrument is capable of providing real-time quantitative information of the occurrence popcorn phenomenon in IC packages. It is found that the popcorn occur temperatures between 218 to 241°C depending on moisture soak condition, but not at the peak temperature of the reflow process. The presence of popcorn and delamination are further confirmed by scanning acoustic tomography as a failure analysis.

Evaluating the Effects of Plasma Treatment prior to Conformal Coating on Electronic Assemblies to Enhance Conformity of Coverage

Technical Library | 2017-06-01 17:12:08.0

The corrosion of Nickel-Palladium-Gold (Ni-Pd-Au) finish terminals in humid environments is known to be reduced with the application of a conformal coating such as acrylic. Corrosion has a higher rate of occurrence around the terminal ‘knee’ of a surface mount component, which may be reduced with the application of conformal coatings. Although radio frequency (RF) plasma processing is generally known to enhance conformity of conformal coating to surfaces through ionic bombardment, the effect on the functionality of assembled printed circuit boards (PCB) is not as well known. The purpose of this study is to assess whether RF plasma processing can enhance the adhesive and coverage qualities of an acrylic conformal coating on PCBs, specifically on Ni-Pd-Au terminals with a knee, and if plasma processing has an effect on the electrical functionality of components and fully assembled PCB.

Influence of Copper Conductor Surface Treatment for High Frequency PCB on Electrical Properties and Reliability

Technical Library | 2019-02-13 13:45:11.0

Development of information and telecommunications network is outstanding in recent years, and it is required for the related equipment such as communication base stations, servers and routers, to process huge amount of data in no time. As an electrical signal becomes faster and faster, how to prevent signal delay by transmission loss is a big issue for Printed Circuit Boards (PCB) loaded on such equipments. There are two main factors as the cause of transmission loss; dielectric loss and conductor loss. To decrease the dielectric loss, materials having low dielectric constant and low loss tangent have been developed. On the other hand, reducing the surface roughness of the copper foil itself to be used or minimizing the surface roughness by modifying surface treatment process of the conductor patterns before lamination is considered to be effective in order to decrease the conductor loss. However, there is a possibility that reduction in the surface roughness of the conductor patterns will lead to the decrease in adhesion of conductor patterns to dielectric resin and result in the deterioration of reliability of PCB itself. In this paper, we will show the evaluation results of adhesion performance and electrical properties using certain type of dielectric material for high frequency PCB, several types of copper foil and several surface treatment processes of the conductor patterns. Moreover, we will indicate a technique from the aspect of surface treatment process in order to ensure reliability and, at the same time, to prevent signal delay at the signal frequency over 20 GHz.
