Implementation of a High-Quality Dolby* Digital Decoder Using MMX™ Technology

Technical Library | 1999-05-07 10:23:43.0

Software decoding of Dolby Digital allows it to become a baseline capability on the PC, with greater flexibility than a hardware approach. Intel's MMX™ technology provides instructions that can significantly speed up the execution of the Dolby Digital decoder, freeing up the processor to perform other tasks such as video decoding and/or audio enhancement. Intel has worked closely with Dolby Laboratories to define an implementation of Dolby Digital based on MMX technology that has achieved Dolby's certification of quality.

I Have an Idea for a New Product, but Now What?

Technical Library | 2007-03-13 14:31:11.0

Do you have an idea for an electronic product, the next must-have gadget, music or video system, time saver, or the greatest problem-solving device that was ever invented? Before you begin designing the product, there are a number of tasks that you must complete and issues that you must resolve before you have an actual product design that can be produced, marketed, and sold. This article will provide you with some guidelines to assist you in getting your idea turned into a successful design. Other issues, such as whether or not to apply for a patent for your product idea and in detail how a particular product should be advertised or marketed will not be addressed in this article.

Beat the Heat in Notebooks With Software

Technical Library | 1999-05-06 10:46:06.0

Pentium-class portables present significant packaging problems. The heat generated inside a notebook not only reduces microprocessor reliability, but the reliability of peripheries such as hard drives and video chips. Although the processor is the primary heat-generating source, it isn’t always the component least tolerant of temperature...

MMX™ Technology Architecture Overview

Technical Library | 1999-05-07 10:20:34.0

Media (video, audio, graphics, communication) applications present a unique opportunity for performance boost via use of Single Instruction Multiple Data (SIMD) techniques. While several of the computeintensive parts of media applications benefit from SIMD techniques, a significant portion of the code still is best suited for general purpose instruction set architectures. MMX™ technology extends the Intel Architecture (IA), the industry's leading general purpose processor architecture, to provide the benefits of SIMD for media applications.

Printed Circuit Board Recycling: Physicochemical And Economic Analysis Of Metals

Technical Library | 2022-01-05 23:20:33.0

This study aims to present the characterization of five different types of printed circuit boards (PCBs) for use in future recycling processes. PCBs used: motherboards, lead free motherboards, video cards, memory and printer cards. The comminution of the circuit boards was performed using blade mills and hammer mills with 9mm and 6mm meshes, respectively. Throughout the physical processing, analysis was made with stereoscopic optics to ensure that the correct materials had been released. The pre-magnetic separation parts were given a granulometric classification followed by acid digestion and loss on ignition tests.

Rework Challenges for Smart Phones and Tablets

Technical Library | 2015-04-23 18:48:18.0

Smart phones are complex, costly devices and therefore need to be reworked correctly the first time. In order to meet the ever-growing demand for performance, the complexity of mobile devices has increased immensely, with more than a 70% greater number of packages now found inside of them than just a few years ago. For instance, 1080P HD camera and video capabilities are now available on most high end smart phones or tablet computers, making their production more elaborate and expensive. The printed circuit boards for these devices are no longer considered disposable goods, and their bill of materials start from $150.00, with higher end smart phones going up to $238.00, and tablets well over $300.00.

Making Sense of Laminate Dielectric Properties

Technical Library | 2020-12-16 18:50:42.0

System operating speeds continue to increase as a function of the consumer demand for such technologies as faster Internet connectivity, video on demand, and mobile communications technology. As a result, new high performance PCB substrates have emerged to address signal integrity issues at higher operating frequencies. These are commonly called low Dk and/or low loss (Df) materials. The published "typical" values found on a product data sheet provide limited information, usually a single construction and resin content, and are derived from a wide range of test methods and test sample configurations. A printed circuit board designer or front end application engineer must be aware that making a design decision based on the limited information found on a product data sheet can lead to errors which can delay a product launch or increase the assembled PCB cost. The purpose of this paper is to highlight critical selection factors that go beyond a typical product data sheet and explain how these factors must be considered when selecting materials for high speed applications

NON-CONTACT FLUID DISPENSING WITH PS-8200 JETTING VALVE

Technical Library | 2015-08-18 18:39:13.0

Jetting Valve Technology Superior to Needle Dispensing Compared to traditional needle dispensing technology, jetting valve technology is the most effective method for quick and accurate fluid dispensing. Injection technology has many advantages, it provides a combination of high-speed, high quality and low cost production for fluid dispensing processes. Instead of putting focus on getting the application done, jet dispense technology focuses on performance, providing applications like underfill, potting and encapsulation with more precision than ever before. Improved Fluid Dispensing Speed and Accuracy Non-contact jetting valves offer a significant advantage over traditional needle dispense valves. Jetting Valve Dispenser precision reaches to 200µm with dot diameter or line width as small as 250µm and volumetric dispensing down to .0036µl. Minimum space between lines is 180µm and maximum fluid dispense speed is 200 dots/second. The following video illustrates quick, accurate fluid dispensing for an LED packaging application.
