Lead-Free qualification process

Electronics Forum | Tue Aug 23 22:19:02 EDT 2005 | Ken

Basic rule of thumb for lead free manufacturing: If the joint looks "too good" it probably has lead in it. This, of course is based on comparison observations of other components on your assembly.

There are several methods in IPC-TM-650 depending on whether you're testing for the effect of flux residues or board cleanliness. They're available for free download here: http://www.ipc.org/contentpage.asp?PageID=4.1.0.1.1.6

Is there a standard that we should aim for in respect to the strenght of the solder on SMT leads? We have a customer who are testing our product by pulling leads off of pads then returning them.
