We had same problem. Solder balls appeared on top side of board and led to damaged second side stencles. We worked around problem by running blank boards thru oven and inspecting and removing solder before processing boards with parts.

I'm looking for some data to support my argument that HASL boards are not the most ideal boards for manufacturing involving BGA's and 0402's. I'm sure one of you SMT Gurus out there can point me in the right direction! Thank you in advance!

Kinda makes you wonder if the product truly belongs to your customer, doesn't it? There should be a marking or legend on the bare board that identifies the board fabricator. That fab should have artwork / gerber data for the board.

Have you considered engineering a new board with the same form fit and function? It might be easier than reverse engineering the board. But then you did say it was a DOD contract, so I guess that might mean all kinds of hassle to prove a "new" board

The biggest problem is getting paste on the board. We ran a board that had 8 per and would get an occasional insufficient solder joint. I would look into doing the boards with something like a SiPad process (www.sipad.net) My $0.02

If these are these bare [or partially assembled] boards, baking probably will not hurt, as long as the bake is not excessive. If these are these assembled boards, baking probably will not accomplish much. What is the source of this water? If it's

The height varies with board thickness. The top of the board is always held at the same height so as the board thickness increases the pin height decreases. Jerry

We are experiencing cracking of 1206 .1uf/50V capacitors on our boards. Design is keeping the caps away from the board edge 0.200 and perpendicular to the longest edge but still they crack even in the interior of the board. Recommendations? bds are
