Dear All, What is the possible root causes of the dendrite growth? How long its take to cause this dendrite growth? Can dendrite growth cause electrical short? Is there any particular location on PCBA that dendrite tend to grow? Thanks, Sean

In the portion of Chapter 1 on Flip Chips, Ken Gallio states (1.8.2.1) "tin/lead solder leaching or dissolving gold and form metal compounds, called dendrites, that greatly reduce joint reliability because of high brittleness." What is the compositi

From battery fires to non-functional charging stations, from dendrites to poor cable connections, electronic system failures have caused massive recalls. Failures are increasing significantly, not because of quality, but because of usage and implementation of technology. As the expected lifetime usage of parts increases and technology applications change, materials, approaches, and test parameters must change as well.

Conformal coating is a material that is applied to electronic products or assemblies to protect them from solvents, moisture, dust or other contaminants that may cause harm. Coating also prevents dendrite growth, which may result in product failure. This paper will discuss the variables that affect the application of conformal coatings, and review in detail those variables that impact the process of selective coating of printed circuit boards.

Electrochemical migration (ECM) is defined as the growth of conductive metal filaments across a printed circuit board (PCB) in the presence of an electrolytic solution and a DC voltage bias. ECM, also known as dendritic growth, is a critical issue in the electronics industry because the intermittent failure behavior of ECM is a likely root-cause of the high occurrence of field failures identified as no trouble found (NTF)/could not duplicate (CND)
