The grey solder joint appearance in the picture looks to be due to chemistry etching the joints. This can be a common problem with alkaline chemistries running at high concentrations and or alkaline chemistries running in batch machines that require

Why does my solder joints look so wrinkled?

Hly, The solder ball in your picture looks just like the countless BGA solder joints that Ive produced over the past 8+ years. We've had a good number of these joints X-rayed, cross-sectioned, and thermally stressed. Some say that the stretched loo

Does pot temperature affects quality of the solder joints?

Electronics Forum | Thu Feb 02 08:54:43 EST 2017 | emeto

Hello all, I was just wondering if solder pot temperature affects the quality or the life of the solder joints? For example we run 100Sn at 275C. If I bump it up to 300C, what is that going to change?

Testing effect of non-clean flux residue on solder joints

Electronics Forum | Tue Mar 21 12:52:56 EDT 2017 | emeto

No clean is giving us problem in ICT. Other than that, a coating of flux should remain there to pretect the solder joint from the environment. In general you should not clean NO clean - it is supposed to be there.

Most likely happening during the cooling phase. I also produce many of these joints with no reliability, DOA, or field failures to date (thousands upon thousands). Contact your paste supplier and they will give you the technical stuff on what you a

Good morning, I can recommend to use solder paste softeners, which can prepare solder paste for printing process. Softeners rise paste temperature by means of pseudo-planetary motion. Therefore, solder paste reaches room temperature during only 15

Uncoalesced solder problem in fine pitch IC pads

I am dealing with a similar uncoalesced solder issue. This defect has come and gone several times during the last 6 months. See image. In my case, I am using conventional SnPb solder and an entire strip of my OSP finished board (includes various de

Waves soldering: not enough solder remaining on pads

SuMoTe, that is a fair suggestion, but I believe will be a non-starter. The solder pump motors are actually 40V motors being run from a PWM 24V supply. I did one time try hooking up to a separate power supply up to 40V but all this seemed to do was m

Uncoalesced solder problem in fine pitch IC pads

Electronics Forum | Thu Sep 11 14:47:40 EDT 2008 | rarnold

For Production purposes, the problem goes away when a new solder paste lot is used. As I reported in my first message though, the problem keeps coming back. Most likely, paste lot is not the Root Cause (3 different lots now in the last 6mo). I rea
