SMTA ANNOUNCES BOARD OF DIRECTORS ELECTION RESULTS

Oct 30, 2004

The SMTA proudly announces its election results for the Board of Directors for the term that began at SMTA International (September 26-30, 2004). Congratulations to Bill Barthel, Plexus; Dr. Ken Gilleo, ET-Trends LLC; Dick Russell, Clover Electronics, Inc.; and Dr. Laura Turbini, University of Toronto, who were each elected to three-year terms. Congratulations also go to David Raby of Soldering Technology International, who was elected to a two-year term as president.

Bill Barthel has been in the electronics industry for over 19 years and now serves as manager of manufacturing technology development for Plexus. He has served as co-chair for the NEMI Board Assembly Technology Roadmap in 1998 and 2000 and has been on the NEMI Technical Committee since 2003. As a member of the SMTA Board, he will seek to strengthen affiliations with other professional societies that would leverage SMTA's body of knowledge and expose the group to ways it could better serve its members.

Ken Gilleo holds a Ph.D. in chemistry earned under a full NASA scholarship at the University of Connecticut (UCONN), and he has developed new products for 30 years as an inventor in electronics, circuitry, materials, nanotechnology, and packaging especially designed for MEMS. He holds over 30 US patents and their foreign equivalents, and his products have received 3 R&D 100 Awards. In continuing his role as VP technical programs on the SMTA Board, he feels he can help keep maintain enthusiasm while guiding SMTA along balanced pathways of new technology.

Dick Russell is the director of quality operations for Clover Electronics, an EMS provider in Newnan, Georgia. He has been in manufacturing since 1972, and in 1983 he was asked to lead a group of engineers at Scientific Atlanta to introduce surface mount technology. He has been the president, vice president, and treasurer of the Atlanta SMTA Chapter and helped to establish the highly successful annual Vendor Show and to create the Atlanta Chapter scholarship fund, which grants financial gifts to students. Likewise, Dick feels he has a considerable amount of experience to offer the SMTA Board of Directors to help chapters achieve results similar to the Atlanta Chapter.

Dr. Laura J. Turbini has been involved in the electronics industry for more

than 25 years and is currently the executive director of the Centre for

Microelectronics Assembly and Packaging (CMAP) and an adjunct faculty

member at the University of Toronto. She has been active in the SMTA,

NEMI, and IPC and has served as a member of the Surface Mount Council. She

is also a member of the American Chemical Society, TMS, MRS, and IMAPS and

is a Senior Member of IEEE. In her participation on the SMTA Board of

Directors, Laura wants to give back to the industry and academia, in

particular to support the next generation of professionals.

David Raby is president and CEO of Soldering Technology International, Inc. (STI) in Madison, Alabama. David has served for six years (1997-2003) on the SMTA Board of Directors, including three years (2000-2003) as treasurer, and he has held all four elected offices in the Tennessee Valley Chapter of the SMTA. Of his role as president of SMTA, Raby says, "I believe my business skills will mesh well with a traditionally technical Board of Directors, the administrative staff, and the needs of the membership to help the organization move forward and choose between the many opportunities in our quickly evolving industry."

Those remaining on the SMTA Board of Directors include VP membership Mike Buseman, Celestica, Inc.; VP communications Evelyn Baldwin, 3M Company; treasurer Dr. Paul Vianco, Sandia National Laboratories; secretary Irene

Sterian, Celestica, Inc.; and Planning Committee members Dan Baldwin, Ph.D., Engent, Inc.; Steve Greathouse, Intel Corporation; and Emmanuel

"Manno" Simus, Raytheon Missile Systems.
